To all residents of the 1900 Perdido Residence hall and Sister Sister Stanislaus hall.

Due to a lack of electrical power in both dormitories for an extended period of time, many refrigerators contain badly spoiled foodstuffs. The refrigerators must be removed, so that repair and cleaning of the building may be completed. University owned property is currently being removed.

If you personally own a unit in your dorm room or apartment, we ask that you make arrangements to have it removed as soon as possible. At some point, the University will have to remove abandoned units.

We will attempt to contact each of you to clarify how you would like to handle the situation. We thank you for your cooperation and realize that you have many demands on your time right now.

Sonny Neville, Executive Director,  Auxiliary Enterprises

Message from Dr. Hovland

Good afternoon. We have completed the clinic placement of our senior class. Students are being placed in our statewide clinics and in some of the most outstanding private offices in the state. The response of the Louisiana dental community has been exceptional in establishing these clinic sites.

We have lecture room facilities in the Pennington Biomedical Research Center for the first and second-year classes. The third-year lectures will be in the LSU School of Veterinary Medicine. Dental Hygiene and Laboratory Technology will be at the LSU South Campus.

We are developing a School of Dentistry campus in three buildings on LSU’s South Campus. Some cleaning and renovations must first be completed. Our plan is to establish a 30-chair dental clinic, some laboratory support, lecture facilities for all student classes, and faculty and administrative offices. This will take, we estimate, four to six weeks. The campus is small, a bit rustic, and we have cows as neighbors. We are so fortunate to have been provided the use of this campus.

Accommodations in Baton Rouge will be arriving next week with mobile homes and October 3rd for the Baltic Ferry. Students have been on the internet viewing the rooms. We will provide specific details when they are complete.

FEMA Aid for Students

All LSUHSC students who were affected by Hurricane Katrina are encouraged to register with the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) by calling 1-800-621-FEMA or by utilizing the website http://www.fema.gov. Students living on their own should register individually, even if they were already registered as part of their parents’ household. This includes students who were living in apartments or residence halls in the New Orleans area. Students who were sharing housing (roommates) should also register individually. Additional information for students is available on the Louisiana Board of Regents web site at http://www.regents.state.la.us/katrina.htm.

Good afternoon. I took care of some personal things yesterday like retrieving my cars from the airport parking garage.

We continue to make progress in obtaining housing accommodations. Hope to have specific information by Wednesday.

We are working with many generous people and companies to establish a clinic on our new “LSU South Campus” home away from home. We will have a lot of people to thank.

The classrooms and preclinical space is coming together nicely. We are also identifying faculty offices on the LSU South campus.

Some things are still moving and when we have the final plan I will share it with you.

We still have not been able to visit the dental school as the water is still too high on the campus.

LSU and the Saints victories this weekend were nice!

I continue to be optimistic that we will be fine. This tragedy also brings us many opportunities.

Good afternoon. We continue to work and prepare for our students and programs. More faculty keep stopping by our “headquarters” at the LSU System Office on the LSU campus. It is great to see those familiar faces.

We will inform you as details emerge. Tomorrow night we will be watching LSU football. Geaux Tigers!

Good afternoon. We are continuing to develop facilities and curriculum. We have made some great progress today, and I am more confident than ever that we will work through this setback successfully.

We are also actively addressing the housing problem. Our goal is to have housing for faculty, students, and staff in the near future.

We have communicated with or located most of our students and much of our faculty.

I have not mentioned in my messages the hurt that all of us in the LSU family feel. Many have lost their homes, and our school has suffered damage from wind and flooding. I cannot express how deeply I feel for our students, faculty and staff. However, we are a school that will reopen in September. Our faculty are committed to continuing an excellent educational program. I am so proud of the resolve and commitment of our students, faculty and staff.

Good afternoon. This morning we visited the Pennington Biomedical Research Center in order to see their classroom and lecture facilities. It is a beautiful and large facility that will definitely meet our needs. We will be sharing the facilities with other schools of the HSC.

I also met with the student leadership this morning. We had a good meeting and addressed their questions. I requested their help and advice as we prepare our plans and move forward. They have done a wonderful job in communicating with their classes and providing assistance to myself and others.

I have been in contact with the Dental Hygiene faculty and they are finalizing their plans. Dental Laboratory Technology is also planning their programs.

I have been in contact with most of the residency program directors and we have had discussions regarding their plans.

I will keep you updated daily on progress. Thanks for your patience.

Good afternoon. We have developed a plan for our DDS, Dental Hygiene, and Laboratory Technology programs.

First, it is our expectation to be back in our school in New Orleans by January. In the interim, we will continue our educational programs at various sites starting Monday, September 26.

For our senior dental students, we are identifying clinic sites in various areas of the state including our clinics in Alexandria, Lafayette, and Independence, as well as other clinics in Baton Rouge and Monroe. All seniors will receive excellent clinical experiences and it is our expectation they will graduate on time.

We are basing our first, second, and third year dental programs in Baton Rouge. The Pennington Biomedical Research Center will be a major teaching facility. Other locations such as the Veterinary School at LSU may be utilized for lectures.

Dental Hygiene and Laboratory Technology plans are being developed for clinic and educational instruction. Final plans will be shared soon.

The LSU System is making good progress in finding housing in Baton Rouge for students and faculty. We plan to have specific information for you before the end of the week.

To summarize, our School will resume operations on September 26. We will share more detailed information as we proceed.

We ask that all students, staff, and faculty continue to exercise patience.  There will be more information concerning the start of classes by next week.  Today, progress was made with location of faculty and students.  Work has begun on curriculum changes.  Attempts to locate housing is the most difficult problem.  More later…

Good afternoon. One of the questions many have is will we continue to have jobs. The answer is a big yes. Our plans are to continue the operation of the Dental School from Baton Rouge most likely the Pennington Biomedical Research Center. We will establish clinic sites throughout the State until we can return to New Orleans. We will continue to be a functioning dental school and will continue all our programs. It will be a challenge that I know our faculty, staff, and students will meet this challenge. The excellence we established at our school will continue and grow.

We have received many emails regarding the transfer of our students to other schools.  It is not our intent to transfer our DDS, Dental Hygiene, or Laboratory Technology students to other schools.  It is our goal to continue our LSU programs in temporary facilities or clinics in Louisiana.  We will be creative and flexible.  We will stay together.  When the situation allows, we will then move back to our home in New Orleans.  At this time, as best we know, the only flooded areas of the dental school are the basement and the first floor.  We can repair our facility, move forward, and continue to provide the best dental education in the world.

On another subject, students have begun a discussion board at www.est1982.com.  All students and dental faculty can use that site as a board to communicate with each other as they wish.

Joining me at the LSU Systems Office today are several faculty members, department heads, and students.  A top priority is to locate students, faculty, and staff and determine where they are and how we can contact them.  On the right side of the LSUHSC homepage is a “Register Online” section.  Please register and provide the information requested.  You can update the information if you move.

It is my understanding the school of dentistry took water in the basement and first floor.

We are actively developing plans for our students to continue their education.  As you can imagine, housing is a primary concern and problem.

Many faculty and staff have inquired about future pay issues.  On this website, the LSU System will provide information on pay issues sometime this afternoon.

Again, my thoughts are with all of you.

We have established a logistics center in Baton Rouge. We are committed to making arrangements so all of our students will complete their education in a timely manner. Various options are being discussed. Please be patient until we are able to work out some more details. Decisions on the various options will be made from this location only.

As decisions are reached and plans are finalized, updated information will be posted on this web site. Please keep checking this site. Should you have questions in the meantime, you may call (225) 578-4033 or email at DentalSchoolContact911@lsuhsc.edu.

Again, at this time, please be patient as we move forward.
