Primary Caregiver Supplement

A supplement opportunity has been running at NIAID for the past year. NIAID recognizes that postdoctoral scientists with young children or ailing relatives are sometimes unable to focus completely on their research activities because of primary caregiver responsibilities. As a result, these circumstances may delay an individual's transition to an independent career or reduce their scientific productivity at critical periods.

The Primary Caregiver Technical Assistance Supplement (PCTAS) is designed for PIs to plan and request funds to cover for postdoctoral scientists while they are away fulfilling caregiver responsibility, whether that is for a new baby or an ailing family member. Principal investigators may request additional funds to hire a mid-to-senior level technician at a full-time or part-time level of effort to fill in for the postdoctoral scientist when he/she is required to be away from the lab to fulfill their caregiver responsibilities. Administrative supplements must support work within the scope of the original project.

This program is not well-known, so I'm reaching out for your awareness, should your lab be in a situation where this would apply. The information to apply is located here: https://grants.nih.gov/grants/guide/pa-files/PA-18-926.aspx

If you have any questions, the contact is Raushanah Newman (newmanrau@niaid.nih.gov).
