The following was written for Blackberry 7 and older devices.

 

 

Compose an email

  1. From the home screen scroll to the "Messages" icon (Image of an envelope. By default in the top left) and push the track ball.
  2. Press menu and choose "Compose Email"
  3. Select the recipient from your contacts list and choose "Email <recipient name>". 
    Alternately, follow the directions for How to perform a Lookup from the GAL if you'd like to send to someone not in your contacts.
  4. Type the message.
  5. Press the track ball for a menu and choose "send".

 

 

View an Attachment 

Blackberry devices are capable of viewing attachments of the following types:

  • .doc
  • .xls
  • .ppt
  • .pdf
  • .txt
  • .aspx or .htm
  • .wpd
  • .zip

Other types are not viewable by the Blackberry device.

Steps to view an attachment:

  1. Scroll down to the name of the attachment (This may not be needed if there is only one attachment but is required for messages with multiple attachments).
  2. Press the track ball and select Open Attachment.

 

Configure deletions to remove from both handheld and mailbox

  1. From the home screen select the "Messages" icon.
  2. Press menu and scroll down to select "Options".
  3. Select "Email Reconciliation".
  4. Highlight the option for "Delete On" and press the track ball.
  5. Select "Change Option" and choose the desired choice.
    • Handheld = deletes messages on the handheld only.
    • Mailbox & Handheld = deletes from both locations.
    • Prompt = Prompts you for the desired option on each delete request.
  6. Press the track ball and choose "Save".

 

How to Configure Message Filtering

  1. From the Main Menu, choose "Messages".
  2. Press menu.
  3. Choose "Options", and "Email Filters".
  4. At the top specify what action to take if none of the filters apply.
  5. Press menu on any existing filter at the bottom, and select "Edit" to make changes to it, or "New" to create a new filter.
  6. Specify the details of the filter, and when you are finished, save the results.

Note: To disable a filter without deleting it, select it from the list, press menu and select "Change Option".

 

How to Configure an Out of Office Reply

  1. From the Main Menu, choose "Messages".
  2. Press menu.
  3. Choose "Options", and "Email Settings".
  4. Select "Use Out Of Office Reply", "Change Option", and "Yes".
  5. The bottom of the screen will display the Out of Office message.
  6. Edit the message, press menu and select "Save".

 

How to Perform a Lookup from the LSUHSC Global Address List

  1. From the Address Book, press menu and choose "Lookup".
  2. Type in the name or ID you want to look up, and press the track ball.
  3. It will display [Looking up: ] for a few seconds, and then it will show the results of the lookup.
  4. Select the entry that is appropriate, press menu and then "Email <recipient name>". If you are unsure, select a name, press menu and then "View" to get more information. 
    You can go back to the lookup later, or delete it when you are done with it.

 

Hide icons on the Home Screen

  1. From the home screen, scroll to the icon you wish to hide and press menu.
  2. Select "Hide" to hide the icon if you do not use this function.

 

Move icons on the Home Screen

  1. From the home screen, press menu to bring up all icons.
  2. Press menu and select "Move Application".
  3. Move the track ball so the icon is in the desired location and press the track ball.

 

How to Configure Alerts for Level 1 Messages

To forward specified messages as "Level 1":

  1. From the home screen select the "Messages" icon.
  2. Press menu and select "Options".
  3. Scroll down and select "Email Filters".
  4. Press menu and select "New".
  5. Name the filter, and specify the criteria you want to match, such as entering an e-mail address in the From: line, specifying the Importance level, etc. 
    You can enter multiple addresses separated by semicolons.
  6. Scroll down to "Action", press menu, select "Change Option", then select "Forward".
  7. Scroll down to "Forward with Level 1 Notification" and press the track ball to check this box.
  8. Press menu and select "Save".

To change the alerting method for incoming "Level 1" messages:

  1. From the main menu, select the "Profiles" icon, and then select "Advanced".
  2. Select the profile you want to modify, press menu, and select "Edit".
  3. Scroll down to "Level 1", press menu and select "Edit".
  4. Specify a distinctive "Tune" that will be more noticeable than for regular "Messages", set the volume, etc. 
    Make sure you set both the "In Holster" and "Out of Holster" behavior.
  5. Repeat for any additional profiles you want to modify. 
    You can even specify audible, or vibrating alerts for the "Quiet" profile, 
    so that you will always get an alert for these important messages.

 

Compose a PIN to PIN message

Note: This procedure is easier if you've already added the recipient's PIN's in your Address Book.  For steps on doing so see "Add PIN and DC# to contact entries in Address Book"

  1. From the home screen select the "Messages" icon.
  2. Press menu and choose "Compose PIN".
  3. Select the recipient from your contacts list or type the recipient's PIN
  4. Type the message.
  5. Press the track ball for a menu and choose "send".

Use Direct Connect (Alert) - NEXTEL DEVICES ONLY

Note: This procedure is easier if you've already added the recipient's Direct Connect number in your Address Book.  For steps on doing so see " Add PIN and DC# to contact entries in Address Book"

  1. If you have entered the DC number on the contact entry for the person you wish to alert then you can simply enter the Phone application.  
  2. Scroll down to the most recently called list and begin typing the name of the person you wish to alert.  
  3. Once highlighted you can hit the Push To Talk (PTT) button on the left of the blackberry to alert.
  4. While holding down the PTT button begin speaking and let go of the button to listen.   It works like walkie talkies.
  1. Alternately, if you wish to Alert someone who is not in your contacts list then ... From the home screen scroll to the "Phone" icon and push the track ball.
  2. Type the DC# and push the track ball for a menu and choose Alert.
  3. When a message box appears saying "Ready to Alert" you can push the Push To Talk (PTT) button on the left of the blackberryfs
  4. While holding down the PTT button begin speaking and let go of the button to listen.   It works like walkie talkies.

Add PIN and DC# to contact entries in Address Book

  1. From the home screen scroll to the "Address Book" icon and push the track ball to select.
  2. Start typing the name of the person you wish to edit and when highlighted press menu and choose "Edit".    Alternately, if the person is not listed in your contacts you can push menu and select New Address
  3. In addition to updating any fields you wish to modify scroll down to DC# (For the direct connect number, also known as the Alert number or Push To Talk [PTT] number). and type in the DC#
  4. Just below the DC# is the PIN.
