Subject: Hurricane Katrina Recovery – Update #94
Posted: June 6, 2009
Three of our proposals for
permanent building repairs and hazard mitigation
were re-submitted to FEMA based upon the favorable
decisions issued by Charlie Axton’s decision team on
May 27th. The three proposals address the Allied
Health/Nursing Building, the Student Residence Hall
and the Resource Center. Once the three proposals have been entered
into the Federal/FEMA automated system, a series of
reviews will occur within the local FEMA offices and
one review at the State level. When the local reviews are successfully
completed, the proposals will be packaged and sent
to Washington, DC
for one additional review. Historically this process has been very time
consuming, but we are working with FEMA to expedite
the process as much as possible.
Clinical faculty and staff from
the Departments of Radiology and Medicine and
Radiology were moved into the Clinical Education
Building. They are occupying spaces on the 3rd and 4th
Floors respectively. Work continues on the 1st and 2nd Floors with
the goal of being ready for those floors to be
reoccupied by the end of June or early July.
The permanent repairs and
mitigation at the Lions/LSU Clinic Building are
beginning to wind down as work nears completion. Furniture is being moved in to spaces in the Cohn
Learning Center on the 6th Floor. Work on the exterior stairwell is
substantially complete. The roof mounted generator has been connected
and fuel lines have been run. The building is now fully powered from the
new switch gear located on the 2nd Floor; well above
the levels of any future floods. The old switch gear, generator and the
associated wiring, piping and electrical panels are
being removed.
The frieze that was moved out
of the Clinical Education Building and installed in
the Library Commons area is going through its final
repair and refinishing. The professional art restorer has been on
site and recently applied a new finish to the piece. Carpet has been installed at the entrance to
the Library and in the back office areas. Miscellaneous finish work is being completed.
The Pharmacology lab
renovations in the MEB are nearing completion. Furniture has been moved into the
administrative area. Network cabling has been completed. Fume hood covers have been installed and the

track for sound insulation in MDL #3 and the
partition track is in place. The plumbing for the new case work has been
stubbed up. The alcove area for the copy machine across
from MDL #5 was framed up and dry walled.

installed. Conduit and floor outlets were installed for
the podiums in the auditoriums. Fire alarm devices have been installed in the
auditoriums, the elevator lobby and walkway. The electrical contractor installed

outlets in Room 4202B. The wiring for the AV and Access Grid power
outlets in Room 4202B was run. The A/V contractor installed fans and
auxiliary outlets for their equipment racks in Room
4202B and pulled wiring into the AV racks.
The expansion of the Residence
Hall lobby is progressing. The floor contractor installed floor tile in

expanded lobby area. Additional light fixtures were installed and
the track lighting has been roughed in. New sprinkler heads and escutcheons are in
place in the B & C lobby areas. Wires have been run for security cameras. The ceiling beneath the mezzanine between A & B Towers and in the expanded lobby area was
sheet rocked, taped and floated.
The contractor replacing the
Allied Health/Nursing Building roof has made
significant strides. Workers installed base sheet along the
parapet walls on all sides of the roof. The pitch pan for the exhaust fan on the
loading dock side of building has been installed. They installed the cap sheet on the main roof
on the Bolivar and S. Roman St.
