Subject: Hurricane Katrina Recovery – Update #77
Posted: September 26, 2008
The last days of August and the
1st week of September were consumed by
concerns and preparations for Hurricane Gustav and
Hurricane Ike. The campus was spared the worst of the
effects of both storms, but the preparations
required that the various contractors working on the
many projects around campus shut down their
operations and evacuate their personnel. In addition, LSUHSC Facility Services
personnel were fully engaged in preparing the
campus.
Consequently, little work was done on the projects
during that period of time. To simplify our summarized reporting, this
update will reflect the progress made over the past
three weeks.
There has been a great deal of
activity on the project to make permanent repairs to
the Lions/LSU Clinic Building. The steel frame of the exterior stairwell is
rising rapidly to its final height. A tremendous amount of mechanical, electrical
and plumbing work is underway on the new
Cohn Learning Center
on the 6th Floor. The work on the construction of the new lab
on the 7th Floor is nearing completion.
Both of the new initiatives at
the Dental School
are progressing well. Rough in mechanical, electrical and plumbing
work has been completed in the lab space in Room
8405 and 8401. Additional demolition has been completed on
the 6th Floor. In the Auditoriums, the exterior walls are
being moisture proofed. Ceiling framing has been completed in
Auditorium B and is nearing completion in Auditorium
A.
Chilled water valves have been installed and the
base for the new AHU is being constructed. The preliminary rough in electrical work for
the ceiling lights in both auditoriums is underway.
The renovations at the Clinical Education Building (1542 Tulane Ave.)
continue on a number of fronts. One of the largest efforts is the repair and
replacement of a large number of the old fan coil
units that provide heat and cooling to significant
parts of the building. The painting contractor continues to paint a
number of interior spaces to make them ready for
use.
Electricians are making the electrical connections
to the system furniture that has been installed in
various places in the building. The construction of the new lounge areas has
been a priority. New walls are being constructed and insulated
and rough in plumbing for the kitchenettes is being
completed. Additional access control devices and closed
circuit televisions are being installed at key entry
points to the building. The interior spaces of Floors 3 and 4 in the
Annex have been demolished.
Work continues on the Library
Commons project. Additional walls have been framed up and dry
walled.
Smoke dampers have been installed in the new duct
work, the vent pipe has been connected, and the
rough in plumbing for the coffee kiosk is complete. The electrical rough in for the lights is
finished and the new ceiling lights for the café and
walkway have been laid out.
The project to replace the
ceiling of the 4th Floor of the MEB is
approaching completion. The majority of the ceiling tiles (including
the edge tiles) have been installed. The contractor framed up the ceiling at the
end of the corridors around the return air grilles. The lay in emergency lights, the supply
ducts, the sprinkler caps, ceiling mounted smoke
detectors, and the exit signed have been installed. In the MEB 2nd Floor lobby, the
new walls and ceiling have been primed and painted. Electrical wiring is being completed in the
Campus Office Stores and Medical Center Stores
spaces.
The network wiring contractor pulled network cable
to the engineering office. The contractor completed building out the
area above the elevator and widened the door opening
for the room between the lecture halls.
The new steel for the expanded
roof of the 2nd Floor Residence Hall
Lobby has been installed and the treated wood
blocking is in place. The 1st and 2nd layers
of self-leveling concrete have been installed on the
floor and the cantilever tops of the walkway are
being removed. Casework and countertops are being installed
in the MDL #5 and the plumbers and electricians are
working behind the cabinet installers to connect
sinks, drains, and electrical outlets. The VCT and ceiling tiles have been installed
throughout.
Here are highlights of work
