Subject: Hurricane Katrina Recovery – Update #82
Posted: December 5, 2008
The initial re-occupation
of the Clinical Education Building, 1542 Tulane Ave.
began, as scheduled. Three clinical departments of
the School of Medicine; Surgery, Neurology, and
Pathology are moving into the upper floors of the
building. The faculty and staff have unpacked and
are operating out of their new offices. The second
phase of the move in is planned for mid-December. We
have additional moves scheduled on December 9th and
15th that will include OB/GYN, Urology, Orthopedics,
Dermatology and Anesthesiology.
Four passenger elevators
and the freight elevator were in operation when the
move began. Access control was activated on all the
exterior entrances to the building. Repairs and the
work on the new lounge areas continued on the lower
floors. New lighting is being installed in
conference rooms, hallways, and lounges. Additional
exterior security lighting has been added to the
rear of the building. Carpet and floor tile is being
laid in lounges. Additional furniture and cabinetry
has been installed in conference rooms and lounge
areas. A variety of other repair work continues
throughout the building.
We are pleased with the
progress being made in renovating Auditoriums A and
B at the Dental School. The walls in Auditorium A
have been primed and the electricians installed
wiring for the riser seating and wall sconce
lighting. The concrete was poured and finished for
the stairs in Auditorium B. The new walls and
ceiling have been taped, floated and primed. The
wall scones have been installed on three walls in
Auditorium B. The connections to the new air
handling units that will serve both rooms are being
completed. The electricians have been working on the
6th and 8th Floors of the Clinic Building as work
continues on the lab renovations. Conduit is being
run and wiring has been pulled to junction boxes.
A major milestone in the
project to complete permanent repairs and mitigation
at the Lions/LSU Clinic is about to be reached.
Preparations have been completed to allow the new
switch gear located on the 2nd Floor to be put into
operation. This step insures that a future flood
event would not damage the switch gear which
distributes power to the entire building. The
mechanical contractor has also been working to
prepare critical mechanical equipment that has been
elevated to the 2nd Floor to be put into service.
Building power is scheduled to be switched over to
the new switch gear over the coming weekend.
A great deal of work
continues on the 1st and 6th Floors of the Lions/LSU
Clinic Building. Significant portions of the
demolition of the lab on the 6th Floor have been
completed by both the mechanical and electrical
sub-contractors, now that the lab functions have
been moved to the 7th Floor. Chilled water, heating
hot water and supply lines have been insulated on
the 1st Floor. Crews have been applying plaster to
CMU walls on the 1st Floor and wall tile is being
installed. Conduit has been installed and wire
pulled for the roll up fire protection doors on the
6th Floor. Dimmer switches have been installed and
wire for the new fire alarms has been pulled. The
fire proofing sub has been priming and painting key
areas of the exterior stairwell. Sprinkler stand
pipes are being installed.
The contractor working on
the Library Commons project has laid floor tile and
grouted it in the cafe area, by the coffee kiosk and
in front of the passenger elevators. The renovations
to the lab located in MEB 6109 & 6148 are rapidly
nearing completion. New floor tile has been laid and
the plumbing connections to the sinks have been
made. The walls are being touched up to address
minor damage.
The demolition in MDL 6
located on the 4th Floor of the MEB is well
underway. The ceiling tiles, ceiling grid and the
ceiling mounted light fixtures have been removed
from the main room and from one of the adjacent
spaces. Plumbing and electrical wiring has been
disconnected and made safe to allow the demolition
and removal of case work and equipment. Equipment
has been removed from the lab. Approximately half of
the old flooring has been taken up. On the 2nd Floor
of the MEB, the sprinkler sub-contractor has
installed new sprinkler piping in the lobby.
The project to expand the
lobby of the Residence hall is continuing to more
ahead. The rough in electrical work between Towers A
and B continued over the past two weeks. The old
duct work has been capped and access holes have been
cut in the duct work for the slit diffusers. The
frame work for the new store front is under
construction. Framing for the new sliding door is
nearing completion.
