Subject: Hurricane Katrina Recovery – Update #121
Posted: July 2, 2010
We are anticipating that the
project to complete permanent repairs to the
Clinical Education Building and elevate critical
mechanical, electrical and plumbing equipment into
an elevated enclosure built over the Lakeside
Parking lot will soon be advertised and bid. The remaining details of the design have been
resolved and the Office of Facility Planning and
Control is preparing the advertisements. FEMA has obligated $11.9 million for this
project. We also expect that the project to replace
the roof at 1542 Tulane Ave. will be advertised and
bid in the near future.
Early in March of this year, we
reported that the permanent repair and hazard
mitigation proposals for the CSRB and MEB had
cleared all of the local review queues and had been
forwarded to Washington, DC for final review and
funding.
These two projects total approximately $35.5 million
in Federal funds. At that time we noted that the Federal
Disaster Relief Fund (DRF) balance for FY 2010 had
already been depleted and that additional funds had
to be appropriated by the U.S. Congress in order for
those projects and other new Project Worksheets and
versions to be funded. We have been told that an additional $5+
billion was to be appropriated to the DRF, but the
latest information we have received indicates that
the supplemental appropriation has not yet been
made. We
continue to monitor this situation.
Work is continuing at the
Allied Health/Nursing Building. During the past two weeks the contractor made
the final welded connections for the structural
steel that will support the new 2nd Floor lecture
hall.
They built the concrete forms for the 1st Floor
elevator waterproof wall and the concrete was
poured.
The CMU wall for Elevators 1, 2, and 3 was laid on
the 1st Floor. Temporary walls have been constructed to shut
off the 2nd Floor hallway that runs along the rear
of the building from the entrance off the elevated
walkway to the atrium to allow construction to begin
in that area. The ceiling tile, ceiling grid and wall paper
were removed from corridor and the stud wall
surrounding the 2nd Floor pump room and the ceiling
in Room 262 were removed. The contractor finished removing the
mechanical room CMU wall on the 2nd Floor while
crews continue to run conduit and set the housing
for the relocation of electrical panel D1A. The sump pump for Elevators 1, 2, and 3 has
been set. Crews continue to run fire alarm cables to
the 2nd Floor fire alarm panel and install CMU walls
on the 1st Floor.
The contractor
responsible for the permanent repairs and mitigation
at the Residence Hall installed underground
electrical conduit near the C Tower storage room on
the Bolivar Street side.
They core
drilled in the grade beam for plumbing near the C
Tower storage room on the Bolivar Street side.
An
underground waste line was installed adjacent to the
C tower Roman Street side.
The
contractor completed installing underground
electrical conduits by the C Tower, Roman Street
side and back filled the trench. Crews continue building the concrete forms
for the roof of the new structure and the concrete
forms were removed from the 1st level.
The permanent repair
and mitigation project at the Resource Center is
progressing. The contractor completed the installation of
the elevator
pit parts for Elevator 3 and 4. These elevators are back in service. Crews continued fabricating the chilled water
bypass piping in the 2nd Floor pump room and 17
abandoned data cables were removed from the 2nd
Floor pump room. Workers completed installing conduits through
the floor in the new switchgear room. A concrete form was constructed for the pad
that will be used to support the electrical
transformer in the ATS room and the concrete was
poured.
A CMU wall was constructed in the new switchgear
room on the 2nd Floor and the
main switch
board and emergency panel were installed. Crews continue running conduit for the
electrical panels in the new 2nd Floor switchgear
room.
The contractor
installed ceiling tiles in the large conference room
on the 8th Floor of the Lions/LSU Clinic Building
and the conference room speakers were installed. New floor tile was laid in the elevator
lobby, glass tile was installed on the reception
area walls and the tile was grouted. The aluminum storefront doors were installed
and new light fixtures were installed in the main
lobby area. VCT was installed in the break and mail rooms
and crews continue installing carpet tile in the
large conference room and lobby areas. The AV contractor set the podium and ran
cable to the podium. The contractor continues to install light
fixtures throughout the space.
The contractor
finished driving the piles that will support the
covered walkway that will connect the District
Energy Parking Garage to the Clinical Education
Building. The site was re-graded after all the piles
were installed.
In spite of inclement
weather, the contractor finished excavating the west
side of the new patient parking lot at the Dental
School.
Crews finished preparing the base course for the
lot; installing the geo-textile fabric and laying
the limestone base material. They began installing the concrete curbs for
the islands and corners for the parking lot.
The formwork
for the corners and islands on the west end of the
lot has been constructed and the concrete for the
islands was poured. The contractor continues building formwork
for the corner concrete curbs.
