Subject: Hurricane Katrina Recovery – Update #151
Posted: September 9, 2011

The contract for the new Human Development Center building was advertised by the Office of Facility Planning and Control on August 26, 2011 and the bid opening is scheduled for Wednesday, September 28th. The original construction project had begun shortly before Hurricane Katrina and many of the piles had been driven at the site when the post-storm flooding interrupted the work.  The decision was made to cancel the original contract and the building design was revised to elevate the 1st Floor above the Katrina flood levels.  This also gave us the opportunity to adjust the design to accommodate some changes to the original programs that the building was initially designed to support.

The contractor responsible for completing the permanent repairs and mitigation at the Clinical Education Building continued installing conduit on the 1st and 2nd Floors.  The controller, the car rails and the buffer supports for the front passenger elevators were installed.  The metal deck for the new loading dock in the Lakeside lot was installed and new chilled water and hot water pipes are being welded in the basement.  The contractor constructed wooden forms, installed steel reinforcement and poured concrete for the 1st section of the flood wall around the parking garage.  Crews are building the concrete forms and installing steel rebar for the bollards in the Lakeside lot while others are installing formwork for the second section of the flood wall around the parking garage.

The CSRB exhaust system upgrade contractor finished installing ductwork for exhaust system #3 in the 7th Floor mechanical room and through the roof.  Workers installed the ceiling support framing in the 2nd Floor corridors and began plastering the new ceiling.  Fire sprinklers were installed in the 2nd Floor corridor.  The vibration isolators for exhaust system #1 were installed and the contractor installed wiring on the 7th Floor for exhaust systems #9 and 10.  Ductwork for exhaust system #9 was installed in Room 342 and crews continued installing the ductwork on the 3rd Floor.  Workers began installing the VFDs on the roof for exhaust system #10.  The contractor performed a successful pressure test on the exhaust risers for fan systems #9 and #10 and began insulating the duct risers.

Crews set the new air handling unit 5A in place in the Dental School Clinic Building.  The contractor continued connecting the heating hot water lines for the VAV boxes associated with unit 5A.  They continued installing the new ductwork for unit 5A and began to run the chilled water lines.  The ceiling, ceiling grid and lights were removed as part of the preparations to remove and replace air handling unit 2A in the Clinic Building.  The asbestos contractor removed all asbestos ductwork and piping for unit 2A and the demolition of unit 2A was completed.  The contractor poured the concrete pad that will support the new unit 2A and began installing the new VAVs and ductwork for unit 2A.  Workers installed ceiling grid for unit 6A and installed 22 light fixtures on the 6th Floor.  They continued insulating ductwork and installing electrical conduit for the new ceiling layout in the Library.  Control wire was run to the VAVs for unit L3A in the Administration Building.

The abatement in the mechanical room for unit 5A was completed and crews removed the old AHU 5A from the Clinic Building. The contractor built forms and installed rebar for the concrete pad that will support the new AHU 5A and installed nine (9) VAV boxes on the 5th Floor for unit 5A. The drain pan for unit 5A was installed and workers are installing heating hot water lines for the VAV boxes and the ductwork. The contractor finished removing light fixtures and ceiling tiles in the Library and relocated the VFD for unit 3A in the Administration Building.
