LSUHSC TO OFFER FREE HEALTH EDUCATION AND SCREENING OUTREACH
New Orleans, LA – Faculty and students from the professional health schools at LSU Health Sciences Center New Orleans will offer free health education and screening community outreach at the Congressman Cao AAA Health Care Initiative on Wednesday, July 1, 2009 from 1:00 - 6:00 p.m. at Grace Episcopal Church, 3700 Canal Street.
LSUHSC Schools of Medicine, Public Health, Nursing, and Allied Health Professions faculty will screen participants for high blood pressure, diabetes, depression, lung function, colorectal cancer and oral cancer. Staff from the Breast and Cervical Health Program at the LSUHSC School of Public Health will educate women about breast cancer and walk them through the process to access mammograms. They will also provide information about skin cancer and sunscreen. LSUHSC Urologists will discuss prostate health including prostate cancer and enlarged prostate, providing access to a limited number of men for free screening where warranted. LSUHSC School of Nursing faculty, in partnership with the Department of Health and Hospitals, will vaccinate children for common childhood illnesses with the exception of chicken pox. LSUHSC School of Dentistry faculty will give participants tips about how to maintain healthy smiles. LSUHSC Public Health’s Dr. Melinda Sothern, author of Trim Kids, will help get people up off their feet and moving with special demonstrations and parents will learn about a research study that provides a free diabetes risk assessment for qualified participants.
Other participants include the St. Anna’s Medical Mission, the NOAIDS Task Force, the Partnership for Prescription Assistance "Help is Here Express!" bus, Louisiana Health Care Review, and the Audubon Institute. The FBI will be doing child identification, LA-CHIP will have a sign-up table, and the Treasury Department will have representatives to help people find out if they have unclaimed property. Interpreters will be on hand to improve access to Spanish-speaking participants. There will also be refreshments for participants.
