MEDICAL EDUCATION GROUP HONORS LSUHSC'S MCCLUGAGE
New Orleans, LA – Sam McClugage, PhD, Associate Dean for Admissions at the LSU Health Sciences Center New Orleans School of Medicine, has been awarded the 2009 Southern Group on Student Affairs (SGSA) Robert Sabalis Award for Exemplary Service. The SGSA, a regional group of the Association of American Medical Colleges, represents 47 of the 130 accredited US medical schools.
"Exemplary service" is defined as significant and sustained leadership, expertise, and/or creativity in addressing an issue or issues of importance to the SGSA. Nominees for this award shall have demonstrated, in activities appropriate to membership in the SGSA, an extraordinary record of accomplishment, collaborative leadership, resourcefulness, dedication, mentoring of SGSA colleagues, and commitment to the mission of the SGSA.
Dr. McClugage was recognized for his leadership – serving 5 sustained years rather than the usual 4, as Vice Chair, Chair-elect, Chair for 2 years, and Past Chair. Among his accomplishments are the creation of a voucher system to absorb the cost of attending AAMC meetings for two medical students per school which has greatly increased student participation; the development of the first listserv for SGSA members to enhance communications; mentoring of new members; and being a masterful meeting planner and contract negotiator.
