Library Bulletin Louisiana State University Health Sciences Center Library -- New Orleans

On August 24, 2007, the LSU School of Dentistry returned to New Orleans after 2 years in Baton Rouge. The two dental librarians, Elizabeth Strother and Julie Schiavo, opened the Library (link removed) doors immediately, offering fax, photocopier, and reference service to dental school faculty, staff and students. On October 1, Zerita Dupre joined the Dental Library staff as a library associate, providing much needed assistance to the librarians as clean-up efforts continued. The dental collection was returned from storage to the shelves in early November 2007.

Many changes have occurred in the Library since its return, including making space for the future dental bookstore. Because of limited staffing, the Library is open only regular business hours; however efforts being made to expand hours. Computer equipment has been upgraded and the Library is planning a lab with 8 workstations.

The Dental Library provides a number of services to faculty, students, and staff, including:

  • Assistance with all print and electronic resources (link removed)
  • Computer access to numerous databases and electronic resources
  • Printing via Pay Paw (link removed), 7¢ per page
  • Online searches performed by librarians; assistance with MEDLINE and other databases
  • Off-campus access (link removed) to electronic journals, books, and databases with a library barcode and PIN
  • Wireless network
  • Reserve collection of required and reference textbooks located at the circulation desk
  • Interlibrary loan service via ILLiad (link removed), providing access to books and journals at other libraries
  • Browsing collection of popular magazines and paperback novels
  • A self-serve photocopier using coins or bills (Pay Paw coming soon)
  • Delivery service from the Isché Library (Main Branch) twice a week
  • Conference room, equipped with a PC and digital projector, seats 20 and can be reserved for meetings and seminars
