Steps to set up wireless access at LSUHSC-Library using Windows XP configurationAll wireless users need an LSUHSC UserID and password.
All images are taken from the XP Classic View.
START \ Control Panel \ Network Connections.
On the Network Connections windows, right click on Wireless Network Connection and choose Properties:
|On the General tab of Wireless Network Connection Properties window:|
First at the bottom of the window, check the two boxes "Show icon in notification area when connected" and "Notify me when this connection has limited or no connectivity."
Then under the "This connection uses the following items" box, scroll to the line Internet Protocol (TCP/IP), highlight it, and click the Properties button.
|On the Internet Protocol (TCP/IP) Properties windows -- General tab -- make sure the options "Obtain an IP address automatically" and "Obtain DNS server address automatically" are both chosen.
Click OK to go back to the Wireless Network Connection Properties windows.
|Back on the Wireless Network Connection Properties window, click on the second tab, Wireless Networks. Make sure the option "Use Windows to configure my wireless network settings" is chosen.
On the "Preferred networks" box, click Add, it will open the Wireless network properties window.
|In the Wireless network properties window, on the Association tab, input Network name (SSID): LSUHSC-Secure|
Then verify these other settings:
Network Authentication: Open
Data encryption: WEP
And the option "The key is provided for me automatically" is chosen.
Click on the next tab, Authentication
|Under the Authentication tab, make sure the option "Enable IEEE 802.1x authentication for this network" is chosen. |
Select the EAP type: Protected EAP (PEAP).
Then, click on "Properties" button below it.
|At the Protected EAP Properties window, check the box next to 'Validate server certificate'. From the drop down menu titled 'Trusted Root Certification Authorities', scroll through the alphabetical list and check AddTrust External CA Root and GTE CyberTrust Global Root'. Also, ensure the box next to 'Do not prompt user to authorize new servers or trusted certification authorities' is unchecked.
At the Protected EAP Properties window, make sure in the box near the bottom "Select Authentication Method:" that the option "Secured password (EAP-MSCHAP v2)" is chosen.
Then, click on "Configure" button.
|On the EAP MSCHAPv2 Properties window, uncheck the option "Automatically use my Windows logon name and password (and domain if any)."|
|Keep clicking on OK until you are back to the Network Connections windows (the first image on this page), once again right click on Wireless Network Connection and choose Repair.|
|There should be a dialog box popping up at the wireless network notification icon on the taskbar:|
|Click on the dialog box and the Enter Credentials Window will pop up.
Type in your LSUSHC userID and password. Leave the Logon domain blank.
|Another dialog box will pop up at the notification portion of the taskbar.
Click on it.
| The server will ask you to validate the certificate.
|You are connected!|
