• NIH Information for New Investigators - Currently, NIH encourages new investigators to self-identify by checking a box on the electronic grant application form, so that they can be given special consideration. Peer reviewers are instructed to focus more on the proposed approach than on the track record, and to expect less preliminary data than would be provided by an established investigator. In addition, many NIH institutes and centers give new investigators special consideration in their selection for funding, and in some cases provide five years of support instead of the four that is the NIH average duration for a grant.

Responsible Conduct in Research

• Office of Research Integrity (ORI) - ORI promotes integrity in biomedical and behavioral research supported by the U.S. Public Health Service (PHS). ORI monitors institutional investigations of research misconduct and facilitates the responsible conduct of research through educational, preventive, and regulatory activities.  The institution is required to report to ORI on a yearly basis any presumed cases of misconduct in research that violate ORI and institutional policy.

• LSUHSC-NO Policy on Reporting Misconduct in Research - This policy meets federal requirements and is available in Section 10.7 of the LSUHSC-NO Faculty Handbook.

• LSUHSC-NO Office of Technology Development - The primary responsibility of the Office of Technology Development is to facilitate the research enterprise.  Specifically, the office assists faculty, staff, and students whose research leads to inventions with the process of transferring significant novel intellectual property from the laboratory to the market place.  Inventors are strongly encouraged to disclose inventions to the Office of Technology Development before submitting manuscripts for publishing.

• New Orleans Bioinnovation Center - The Center is a technology business incubator that aims to stimulate bioscience entrepreneurship in the New Orleans area. Its mission is to assist in the development of biotechnology-related companies looking to commercialize technologies from Greater New Orleans area universities, including LSU Health Sciences Center, Tulane Health Sciences Center, the University of New Orleans and Xavier University.

• Grants.gov - This site allows organizations and individuals to electronically find and apply for competitive grant opportunities from all Federal grant-making agencies.

• GrantsNet - A searchable database of funding opportunities in biomedical research and science education. It contains programs that offer training and research funding for graduate and medical students, postdoctoral fellows, faculty. Special tools and resources allow customization of searches, provide updates on latest trends in research and education funding, and provide information on writing grant applications.

• Illinois Research Information Service - IRIS is a searchable database of science funding opportunities offered by government agencies and private foundations.  This service will also, automatically provide by email the results of a daily, weekly or monthly search of your selected key words against the IRIS database.  This subscription service is supported by the Chancellor’s Office and is free to LSUHSC-NO users.

• LaSmarts and Spin - LaSmarts provides daily funding opportunity alerts by email based on your keyword selection.  SPIN allows searches of the InfoEd International database for science funding opportunities.  These services are provided free through support of the LA Board of Regents.
