Mary L. Marix Wins Pfizer Award!

Mary L. Marix, a Reference Librarian at the Isché Library, was selected as a 2001 recipient of the LSUHSC Pfizer Award for Excellence in Education, Research, and Patient Care. The award is given to outstanding employees of the Health Sciences Center.

Mary has a long history in medical librarianship, beginning with earning a Masters in Library Science from Rutgers University in 1978. She was inducted into Beta Phi Mu, the Library and Information Science Honor Society in 1978. She worked at the libraries at Touro Infirmary, New Orleans General Hospital and St. Jude Medial Center before coming to the LSUHSC Library in 1982. She has been a Reference Librarian throughout her time here and served as the Head of Public Services from 1983 to 1989.

Mary is also active in many professional organizations. She belongs to the American Library Association, the Louisiana Library Association, the Medical Library Association, the South Central Chapter/Medical Library Association, and the Health Science Library Association of Louisiana, just to name a few.

Mary coordinates and teaches many Library systems classes for both the faculty and the staff. She works with the rest of the Reference staff in order to provide classes tailored to the specific needs of each group. She is dedicated to providing up to date information about the changing Library Systems. She also plans and presents orientations and presentations for graduate students and residents. Mary has given seminars and presentations to different library associations. She also represents the Library on several University and Association committees; among these is the National Network of Libraries of Medicine where she serves as the Outreach Coordinator for our Library. She is currently serving on the Local Arrangements Committee of SCC/MLA preparing for the Triple Chapter Meeting to take place in New Orleans in October.

Mary is a Louisiana native and is very interested in Louisiana history. She is a licensed New Orleans tour guide. She enjoys reading mysteries and loves cats.
