Library Bulletin Louisiana State University Health Sciences Center Library -- New Orleans
New LibrariansThe Libraries have hired two new librarians in 2013. To understand the significance of this, our last librarian hire was Debbie Sibley, now Director, in 2007.
New Isché Reference Librarian
Welcome to Jessica Brooks, a recent addition to our Library ranks! A native of Ithaca, New York, she began as Reference Librarian and liaison to the School of Allied Health for the Isché Library in March of this year.
Jessica comes to us with a Bachelor's Degree in International Relations from Tulane University and a Master's Degree in Library and Information Science from the Pratt Institute. She recently spent two years in the Republic of Palau, where she served as Director of a community college library. Library instruction was her main focus there, and in her work, she noticed how translators often used fishing metaphors to relate certain concepts to the islanders. As Captain of the Library Ship, Jessica says she gained valuable managerial experience and learned how to adapt to new situations with patience.
A lover of hot weather, Jessica has made a natural progression back to New Orleans, a place she says she always meant to come back to after spending time here for college. She also enjoys doing yoga and has recently travelled to France and adopted a sweet cat named Pineapple. While she prefers watching baseball, Jessica says she is a Saints fan and is looking forward to their games against the Patriots, her dad's favorite team, and the Bills, her brother's favorite team. She appreciates the laidback atmosphere and can be seen bopping around town on her black Vespa.
New Dental Librarian
Rita comes to LSUHSC-NO with a non-traditional library background. Most recently, she was a Senior Medical Editor at the Ochsner Clinic Foundation where she edited scientific manuscripts, taught workshops on scientific publishing, and assisted with publishing The Ochsner Journal. Rita also has experience as a Public Librarian in Maine, was the Education Services Librarian at Dahlgren Memorial Library, Georgetown University Medical Center, and other writer/editor positions on the East Coast.
Rita enjoys knitting, hanging out with her husband, Kevin, a Loyola law student, and their three dogs. She says she used to enjoy gardening, but the bugs and weeds here in the New Orleans area have defeated her in that particular pastime.
We are thrilled to have Rita on the staff here at the Dental Library.
