PubMedlink removed searching is user friendly. For Subject searching, just enter significant or relevant search term(s) in the query box, then press the Enter key or click Go. The Features bar directly beneath the query box provides access to additional search options. PubMed's query box and Features bar are available from every search screen, so users do not have to return to the homepage to enter a new search.
PubMed automatically combines (with the AND function) significant terms using automatic term mapping. The terms are searched in various fields of the citation. If using Boolean operators (AND, OR, NOT), put them in upper case -- e.g., solution focus OR brief therapy.
After pressing the Enter key or click Go, PubMed will display the search results; the query box displays the search terms as entered.
Users can modify their current search strategy by adding or eliminating terms in the query box or by clicking on Details. If users need to apply limits to their search strategy, simply clicking on Limits and a listing of limit selections will be displayed. Note: The limits in effect will appear in the bar above the Display button. To turn off the limits before running the next search, click on the box to remove the check.
Author search
To search by an author's name, enter the name in the format of last name plus initials (no punctuation) -- e.g., sanders cv, taylor s. PubMed automatically truncates the author's name to account for varying initials and designations such as Jr. or 2nd. To search for an author in the author field when only the last name is available qualify the author with the author search field tag [au] -- e.g., gebhardt [au].
Journal Title search
Users may search by the full journal title -- e.g., American journal of nephrology; the MEDLINE abbreviation -- e.g., am j nephrol; or the ISSN number (international standard serial number) -- e.g., 0250-8095. Click on the Journal Browser to locate full journal titles.
