Library Bulletin Louisiana State University Health Sciences Center Library -- New Orleans

Update on the LSU School of Dentistry Library

The two Dental Librarians, Julie Schiavo and Elizabeth Strother, currently provide Library services to dental patrons from an office at the school on South Campus in Baton Rouge and from the Isché Library in New Orleans. They can assist patrons with access to online journals, database searching, library registration, and reference questions.

In an effort to protect the Dental Library collection from the post-Katrina environment at the Dental School, all materials were placed in storage in October and will be inaccessible until the school returns to New Orleans. However, numerous Dental books and journals are still available. Many journals are online and print issues from 2005 and 2006 are now shelved at the Isché Library. The Dental Library office in Baton Rouge houses a number of Dental books that were checked out at the time of the storm and later returned. The Library has also begun to purchase new titles which will also be shelved at South Campus. Unless the books are on reserve for a course, patrons may check out them from the office for a two-week period.

The Librarians can also help patrons with use of the Libraries' new ILLiad system for borrowing materials from other libraries. This web-based InterLibrary Loan system enables patrons to place requests for journal articles, books, and other materials not owned by the LSUHSC Libraries and then track the status of their requests online.

The Library also has continued the Paperback Exchange Collection that was popular in the Dental school in New Orleans. Everyone is invited to stop by Room 104 to browse through the numerous novels in the new collection.

When not operating the office in Baton Rouge, the Dental Librarians work at the LSUHSC Isché Library in New Orleans and welcome phone calls, emails, or visits there from Dental faculty, residents, students, and staff.

The Dental Librarians staff the Dental Library Office on South Campus three days pers week, from 9 a.m. - 4 p.m. The days will vary each week. The office is located in the Preclinical Building (3005) in Room 104.
