County Health Rankings Update!

The County Health Rankings — are a key component of the Mobilizing Action Toward Community Health (MATCH) project. MATCH is a collaboration between the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation and the University of Wisconsin Population Health Institute.

NLM Announces New Look

On January 11, 2011, the National Library of Medicine (NLM) released a new design and organization for its Main Web site. Added features are navigation to popular links, social sharing functionality so users can share content to people through Facebook, Twitter, and social bookmarking services.

Fellowships Awarded to SPH students

Four LSUHSC School of Public Health MPH students were recipients of the New Orleans Schweitzer Fellowships for 2010. Reece Alkire and Meagan Relle are working with Volunteers of America to develop and implement a disease prevention program focusing on homeless veterans. Megan Burns is creating a school gardening program at James Weldon Johnson Elementary School to instruct children on growing, preparing, and marketing fresh produce. Emily Mabile is collaborating with art therapists, teaching children in Central City how to create murals. This art form promotes mental health by empowering children to represent themselves and their schools.

The New Orleans Schweitzer Fellowship Foundaton established in 2007 as part of the U.S. Schweitzer Fellows Program® . Approximately 200 exceptional students from the nation’s top health and human service schools are selected to follow in Dr. Albert Schweitzer’s footsteps.

2010 County Health Rankings

The County Health Rankings — the first time researchers have examined the multiple factors that affect health in each county in all 50 states — a collaborative effort by the University of Wisconsin’s Population Health Institute and the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation.

The 50 state reports help public health and community leaders, policy-makers, consumers and others to see how healthy their county is, compare it with others within their state and find ways to improve the health of their community.

PubMed® Revisions in February

Changes coming to PubMed in early February include:

  • Advanced search page streamlined
  • link to Clipboard will be added to the homepage, if applicable
  • new Limits page with additional limits for dates and search field tags
  • PubMed® Redesign

    NLM® is pleased to announce a redesign of the PubMed interface. While retaining the robust functionality, the interface was simplified to make it easier to use while promoting scientific discovery.

    The changes to PubMed are outlined below. Please note that search processing, including Automatic Term Mapping, has not changed.

    Do this simple test to detect stroke symptoms:

  • Sudden numbness or weakness of the face, arm or leg, especially on one side of the body
  • Sudden confusion, trouble speaking or understanding
  • Sudden trouble seeing in one or both eyes
  • Sudden trouble walking, dizziness, loss of balance or coordination
  • Sudden, severe headache with no known cause
  • Stroke mortality rate has declined over the past few years both in Louisiana and the US.

    For 2005:
    • Louisiana’s rate was 17% above the national median rate.
    • Age‐adjusted mortality rates were 56.7 per 100,000 population for Louisiana and 46.6 per 100,000 population for the US.
    • Black females showed the highest stroke death rate of 78.6 per 100,000 population
    followed by black males with the rate of 78 per 100,000.

    National Public Health Week

    National Public Health Week is April 6 -12, 2009.

    • U.S. life expectancy reached a record high of 78.1 years but still ranks 46th (of industrialized nations).
    • Baton Rouge ranked 4th for AIDS case rates among the largest metropolitan areas in the U.S. in 2006; New Orleans ranked 8th.
    • Minorities experience a disproportionate burden of preventable disease, death, and disability compared with non-minorities.

    All of us have the potential to greatly improve our population’s health. Join the National Public Health Week Organization and the American Public Health Association in promoting their campaign “Building the Foundation for a Healthy America” locally as well.
