Dental Library – Carnival Week Hours
During the week of Mardi Gras, the Dental Library will have abbreviated hours:
Sunday 2/10 Closed
Monday 2/11 8 am – 5 pm
Tuesday 2/12 Closed (Enjoy the parades!)
Wednesday – Friday 2/13-2/15 8 am-5 pm.
Our regular hours will resume on Sunday 2/17

Ische Library – Carnival Weekend Hours
The Isché Library will be open regular hours (8 am to 6 pm) on Friday, February 8th. The Library will be open on Saturday and Sunday (February 9th and 10th) for abbreviated hours. Saturday the hours will be 9:30 am to 3 pm and on Sunday the hours will be 12 noon to 5:30 pm. On Lundi Gras, February 11th the Isché Library will be open 8 am to 5 pm and will be closed on Mardi Gras, February 12th. Regular hours will resume on Wednesday, February 13th.
Dental Mardi Gras Hours
The dental library will have reduced hours for the week of Mardi Gras.

Carnival Weekend Hours
Both the Dental and Isché Libraries will have altered schedules for carnival weekend and will be closed on Mardi Gras day; additionally, Dental will have reduced hours for days after Mardi Gras for Spring Break.

Mass Gatherings and Public Health
Ever wonder why you always get sick at Mardi Gras? Surely it couldn’t be the mass consumption of food and drink combined with the scrambling around outside in all types of weather. Overindulgence aside, the “Mardi Gras malaise” sprang to my mind when I ran across “Public Health Surveillance for Mass Gatherings” (full text PDF) from the Johns Hopkins APL Technical Digest (Lombardo, J.S., et al.; Vol. 27, No. 4 (2008):
Abstract:
Mass gatherings represent specific challenges for public health officials because of the health risks associated with crowd size and duration of stay. In addition, population movement requires public health departments to interact across jurisdictional boundaries to identify risks and disease-management solutions. However, federal privacy laws restrict the sharing of patient data among public health departments in multiple jurisdictions. This article examines previous disease surveillance practices by public health officials in planning for mass events
and describes a simple approach for sharing health-risk information that was employed in 2007 during Super Bowl XLI by the health departments of Indiana, Marion County, Cook County, and Miami-Dade County.

Medical dignitaries grace Carnival’s conclusion
Mardi Gras is over, but we can’t resist one final Carnival connection between LSUHSC and the glittering courts of faux royalty.
If you read Sunday’s (2-10-08) Times-Picayune Living section’s “Splendid ending: a confluence of crowns”, you may have noticed that 1982 Nobel Prize winner Dr. Bengt I. Samuelsson attended the Rex Ball. Dr. Samuelsson and his colleagues received the 1982 Nobel Prize in Medicine for their work with prostaglandins and related biologically active substances. Dr. Nicolas Bazan, Director of the LSU Neuroscience Center of Excellence, also made mention. He took a day off from synaptic signaling to sling beads at Carnival revelers Tuesday morning.
