Welcome Kandice Osborne to the Dental Library

Kandice Osborne has joined the Dental Library staff as Sunday and evening supervisor. She will work Sunday through Thursday from 11:30 a.m. – 8:00 p.m. Kandice is a native of Kenner and a graduate of UNO. She most recently worked at the UNO Credit Union.

Kandice’s arrival coincides with the reopening of the library after our August closing for air conditioning system renovations. We’re happy to welcome her to the Dental Library staff.

Dental Library closing for AC upgrade

Beginning Tuesday, August 16, the Dental Library will be closed for several months, to allow for work on the air conditioning system. Library staff can best be reached by email after the 15th.

As of Monday, August 22:

Although the library will be closed, we may be able to retrieve books for you to borrow. Please contact Liz or Julie if there is anything you need. We are still available to help with online searches, reference questions, accessing articles, etc.

The PayPaw printer and the coin-op/PayPaw photocopier will be moved to Room 5316 and will be available whenever the school is open. For assistance during regular business hours, contact Computer Services in Room 5312.

School of Dentistry in La. Life

“‘Chew’sing An Education: LSU’s Dental School Makes Its Mark” appears in the May-June 2011 issue of Louisiana Life. The article, which includes remarks from two fourth-year students, a faculty member, and Dean Gremillion, emphasizes the family-like atmosphere, state-of-the-art technology, and expertise of the faculty. Cultural Topics Lecture Series

On February 15, Tessie Prevost Williams, administrative assistant in the Department of Pediatric Dentistry, presented “Integrating New Orleans Schools: The Civil Rights Movement Through the Eyes of a Child,” the second in a series of lectures sponsored by the School of Dentistry Library. In 1960 Tessie was one of four black children selected to integrate two New Orleans elementary schools. Tessie described her experiences to an audience of faculty, staff, and students. More of her story is available on the School of Dentistry web site.

Classes in the Dental Library

Two classes on library resources will be taught in the dental library in April.

Classes will be held in the Library Conference Room from 12:00 – 1:00 p.m. Please email us or call 941-8158 to reserve your seat in any or all of these classes.
All dental school faculty, students, and staff are invited to attend. Feel free to bring your lunch.

Tuesday, April 21: Health Literacy Julie Schiavo
Learn how health literacy can affect the way you treat your patients. Health literacy is not just the ability to read health information; awareness of your patients’ literacy level can change how you communicate with them. This class is geared toward anyone involved in patient care.

Wednesday, April 22: RefWorks Liz Strother
RefWorks is a free web-based bibliography and database manager that allows you to create your own personal database by importing references from text files or online databases and other various sources. You can use these references in writing papers and automatically format the paper and the bibliography in seconds.

New Orleans Dental Conference/LDA Annual Session

If you’re attending NODA/LDA on April 3 and 4, be sure to visit the dental library booth, number 711 in the Exhibits. Come with questions about library services, searching the dental/biomedical literature in PubMed, and ordering journal articles via Loansome Doc. Searching via PubMed will be demonstrated.
