USING THE WESTERN INSTITUTIONAL REVIEW BOARD (WIRB)
LSUHSC-NO has entered into an agreement with the Western Institutional Review Board (WIRB) allowing LSUHSC investigators the option of using WIRB for ethical review, approval and monitoring of industry-sponsored clinical trials that meet specific eligibility criteria.
WIRB is an independent IRB located in Puyallup, Washington, that provides services for academic and non-academic institutions. It is the oldest and most experienced independent IRB in the United States. WIRB is accredited by the Association for the Accreditation of Human Research Protection Programs (AAHRPP). Detailed information about the WIRB review process can be found in the Guide for Researchers.
LSUHSC allows the use of WIRB under specific conditions. The LSUHSC Human Research Protection Program (HRPP) will make the final determination as to whether a protocol is eligible for WIRB review, or if it must be submitted for local review by the LSUHSC IRB. WIRB will not review research on behalf of LSUHSC without prior notification from the LSUHSC HRPP that the study has been cleared for WIRB oversight.
Before submitting a study to WIRB, Principal Investigators are required to complete an abbreviated application for review by the LSUHSC Human Research Protection Program.
The WIRB Guidance document provides the eligibility criteria for WIRB review, instructions for pre-submission to the HRPP, instructions for submission to WIRB, and additional information. Form A & the Request for Reliance application are used for pre-submission to the HRPP.
