Subject: Hurricane Katrina Recovery – Update #156
Posted: December 2, 2011

The Office of Facility Planning and Control has issued the formal Notice to Proceed to the contractor for the permanent repairs and mitigation on the 1st Floor of the Dental Administration Building.  The contractor has been instructed to begin work on or before December 19th and the contract provides for completion within 180 days.  This $2M project will return food service to the campus and will add a coffee kiosk and a large lounge/study area along the lines of the Library Commons that will be accessible to students 24/7.

The award recommendation has been made for the contract to construct a new Maintenance Building on the back campus of the Dental School.  This structure will replace two buildings that were destroyed by Hurricane Katrina and demolished some time ago.  The bids opened on November 22, 2011 and the low bidder confirmed his pricing.  The notice of award and the contract documents will be sent to the low bidder.  The bid documents contemplate a construction schedule of 270 calendar days from the date of the Notice to Proceed.

The notice of award and the contract documents for the demolition of the Dog Kennel and Vivarium located on the Dental School campus have been sent to the low bidder.  Demolition should be completed within 45 calendar days of the effective date of the Notice to Proceed.   Both structures were damaged during Hurricane Katrina and changes in the research enterprise over the ensuing years have eliminated the need for these facilities.

Work on the permanent repairs and hazard mitigation at the Clinical Education Building is proceeding.  The contractor continued installing conduit and storm drain pipes on the 3rd level of the new elevated MEP building.  Crews constructed the concrete forms for the steps to the loading dock, the roof of the new transformer vault, and areaways 5, 6, and 7 and poured the concrete.  The concrete forms have been removed.

The contractor performing the upgrades to the CSRB exhaust system has installed the isolation dampers for Exhaust Systems 1, 3, and 4.  The new fan motors for fans EF1-1, EF1-2, EF-1C, EF-2A, EF-2B, EF-C1, EF3-2, EF4-1, and EF4-2 were installed and the control wiring for exhaust system #9 is being run.  The control panel enclosures for fan systems #1, #2, #3, #4 and #10 were installed.  Crews removed the plaster ceiling from the corridor on the 2nd Floor.

The project to replace the air handling units in the Dental School Clinic and Administration Buildings continues.  The old ductwork serving unit 4A in the Clinic Building has been removed and crews removed the old air handling unit.  The mechanical room CMU block wall for unit 4A was removed and the concrete pad for the new unit was poured.  The contractor is installing the heating hot water lines, the ductwork and VAVs for unit 4A and the installation of the new AHU is underway.   The contractor started balancing units 5A and 5B.

Workers finished installing the chilled water lines, the heating hot water lines and the ductwork transitions for unit 6B in the Clinic Building. The new chilled and heating hot water lines for unit 6B have been pressure tested.  The contractor started insulating the heating hot water lines that supply unit 6B.  The chilled and heating hot water lines for units 7A and 7D have been insulated.   Workers are installing the ceiling in the 7th Floor Men’s restroom and the elevator lobby on the 7th Floor of the Clinic Building.

Crews set units L2B and L3B in place in the Administration Building and began installing the ductwork and VAVs for unit L2B.  The ductwork for unit L2B has been pressure-tested and is being insulated.  The heating hot water lines for unit L3B have been insulated.  The new mechanical room CMU walls for units L2B and L3B have been constructed.  Crews continued installing the chilled water lines, the chilled water valves and the control wire for units L2B and L3B and continued to insulate the new ductwork for units L4C and L4D.  The mechanical room doors for units L4C and L4D were installed and the new units were started up.  The contractor finished installing ceiling tile and light fixtures in the Library and cleaned the work space.  They continue to install ceiling grid in the Library offices.
