Wiley maintenance, Saturday, March 19

Users of the Wiley Online Library—which includes resources such as Cochrane, the Current Protocols, and a number of full-text journals—should be aware that service will be unavailable for up to 3 hours on Saturday, March 19, from 6:00-9:00 CDT for essential maintenance.

TEDMED Viewing Schedule: November 19-20

Those at the Dental Campus will be able to watch both days in the Wirth Room.

TEDMED is the independently owned and operated health and medicine edition of the world-famous TED conference, dedicated to “ideas worth spreading,” and brings together people and ideas from disciplines inside and outside medicine. The 2015 Stage Program will include the following sessions, with approximately 5 speakers in each session: Human Explorations, Mind Matters, Catalyzing Great Science, Back to Basics, Food Fix, Techno-Utopia, Who Cares for Health Care?, and Out There.

Databases Beyond PubMed: March’s Library Lunchtime Learning

Choosing the right tool for the job is just as important in the library as it is in the clinic. PubMed/MEDLINE is a reliable and extensive resource, but it may not always be the appropriate one for your information need. During March’s Library Lunchtime Learning session, we’ll examine several other databases that could be appropriate to use in different circumstances.

Databases Beyond PubMed

March 17, 12-1 p.m., Computer Laboratory, 4th floor Library, Resource Center Building

March 23, 12-1 p.m., Copping Room (2309), LSU School of Dentistry

If you plan to attend, please RSVP to rpremo@lsuhsc.edu with your name and department; however, drop-ins are welcome!

Abstract Writing workshop

In scholarly writing, abstracts and citations have a great deal of impact in terms of touching the outside research community (after all, when was the last time you did not use abstracts to select which search results or conference posters you wanted to read in entirety). Yet, authors often spare them little attention, throwing together a few sentences before submitting a manuscript.

As part of the monthly Library Lunchtime Learning series, next week we will focusing on how to write strong abstracts that accurately represent your research while attracting potential readers. Additionally, we will cover a few guiding principles for citing sources.

If you plan to attend, please RSVP to rpremo@lsuhsc.edu; however, drop-ins are welcome!

Patient Education and Consumer Health workshops in January

Start 2015 by refreshing your knowledge about patient education and consumer health by attending the first Library Lunchtime Learning workshop of the new year, when we will be talking about health literacy and why it’s important, sources for science-based patient education, how to evaluate websites for trustworthiness, and guidelines for those creating their own patient education materials.

We hope to see you at Noon on either Wednesday, January 14, in the Wirth Room (2203) on the Dental Campus or Tuesday, January 27, in the Ische Library’s Computer Lab for this important and timely topic. Please RSVP at rpremo@lsuhsc.edu if you can, but remember that drop-ins are always welcome.

Become a Better PubMed User

Teaching, clinic, committees, research, mentoring, continuing education, administrative duties: With all that on your plate, do you really have time for inefficient literature searches?

The November Library Lunchtime Learning presentation—PubMed Beyond the Basics—is designed to help you get the most out of the premier biomedical citation database. Join us and learn how to more effectively and efficiently search PubMed using advanced features such as Medical Subject Headings, filters, index terms, and the Related Citations and Clinical Queries functions to more easily find the research you need. In addition, we’ll show you how to personalize your PubMed experience via MyNCBI, which will allow you to create bibliographies, automated searches, and separate collections.

The session will be held once at the Dental Campus and once Downtown. If you plan to attend, please RSVP to dentlib@lsuhsc.edu.  But remember, we always welcome drop-in attendees. We hope to see you there!

Happy International Open Access Week

Open Access logo

Open Access logo

Open access to information—the free, immediate, online access to the results of scholarly research and the right to use and re-use those results—has the power to transform the way research and scientific inquiry are conducted. It has direct and widespread implications for academia, medicine, science, industry, and for society as a whole. October 20-26 has been declared International Open Access Week, an opportunity for education and advocacy regarding the open sharing of information. Visit the Open Access Week website for more information about events being held around the world.

In honor of Open Access Week, LSUHSC-NO will be offering a Library Lunchtime Learning workshop on the topic tomorrow, October 21, at noon in the Computer Laboratory on the 4th floor of the Isché Library. We hope to see you there!

Separate open access fact from fiction at October’s lunchtime workshops

In honor of International Open Access Week, October’s Library Lunchtime Learning will focus on this hot topic in scholarly communication by introducing attendees to the concept and looking at the latest news in OA mandates. The workshop will also discuss predatory publishers (some of who disguise themselves in the cloak of open access) and how to identify article and conference solicitations that may not be on the up and up.

We hope to see you at 12 p.m. on either Thursday, October 9, in the Wirth Room (2203) on the Dental Campus or Tuesday, October 21, in the Ische Library’s Computer Lab for this important and timely topic. Please RSVP at dentlib@lsuhsc.edu if you can, but remember that drop-ins are always welcome.

SoD’s Martello Honored for Volunteer Service

Congratulations to LSUSD clinical faculty member Dr. Frank Martello. The United Cerebral Palsy of Greater New Orleans (UCPGNO) recently honored him for his 30 years of volunteer service at the organization’s Dental Clinic. Since 1984, Dr. Martello has treated the oral health needs of thousands of developmentally disabled children and adults with cerebral palsy, Down syndrome, and autism. Additionally, Dr. Martello has provided oral screenings at Louisiana Special Olympics events for the past 20 years and helped establish the Farhad Grotto Dentistry for the Handicapped facility in Harahan.

Learn at the Libraries in September

Evidence-Based Practice is a term that is often bandied about but rarely understood. During the Library Lunchtime Learning session in September, we hope to clear up some of the mystery by taking attendees step by step through the EBP process, from identifying the clinical question through evaluating the decision made. Other topics of conversation include the resources that are most helpful for answering EBP questions as well as barriers to implementing EBP.

We hope you can join us at either workshop. If you plan to attend, please RSVP to dentlib@lsuhsc.edu.
