Dental Scam Lands Mother and Daughter in Prison

Last week (July 25), a fake dentist pleaded guilty to practicing dentistry without a license and will be sentenced to years in prison.

During the fall of 2012, Oklahoma authorities discovered nearly 100 victims of a dental scam in Oklahoma City.

Elizabeth Hinojosa, 47, and her daughter Monica Salazar Orozco, 28, were using the dental office where they worked (the mother as a dental assistant and the daughter as a receptionist) for after hour dental appointments. One victim, Carroll Jarrett of Anadarko, Okla., lost his front teeth after paying $4,500 to have them replaced.

Jarrett recalled going back to the office where Hinojosa treated him (or ÔÇ£Dr. LizÔÇØ as her victims had come to know her) and instead was met by another dentist who had no record of his precious visits. Hinojosa and her daughter were nowhere to be found.

The mother and daughter duo posed as dentists after hours while employed as office workers during the day at Dental Spa, owned and operated by Dr. Salam Ramadan.

If paid in cash, Hinojosa and her daughter offered services like root canals, extracting teeth and putting braces on patients to uninsured customers who spoke little English.

Nearly 100 adults and children were victimized by Hinojosa and Orozco. The crimes took place between September 2010 and May 2011.

Hinojosa pleaded guilty to practicing without a license, second-degree forgery, medical battery and embezzlement and was sentenced to five years.

She also got 10 years probation as part of a plea agreement.
