New Orleans, LA – Under the leadership of Dr. Hernan Bazan, LSUHSC vascular surgeons screened nearly 300 people for abdominal aortic aneurysms, carotid artery blockage, and peripheral artery disease during the free AAA screening on May 16. The screening, organized by Pam Ballard at the LSU Healthcare Network, was held in conjunction with Aneurysm Outreach, Inc.

Ten abdominal aortic aneurysms were found among the 292 participants, in 3-5% range which is the national average for AAA screenings. Typically silent until they rupture, the participants were given life-saving information -- 90% of ruptured abdominal aortic aneurysms are fatal.

The LSUHSC team also discovered 6 participants had significant carotid artery disease, and about a dozen with peripheral artery disease.

Five third-year medical students volunteered to help out, as well as 35 volunteers from Aneurysm Outreach and the community.

All involved felt it was a very successful community outreach initiative.
