New Orleans, LA The School of Nursing at LSU Health Sciences Center New Orleans has earned accreditation from the Commission on Collegiate Nursing Education for the maximum allotted time period of ten years.

Both the baccalaureate and master’s degree programs were evaluated on four Program Quality Standards including Mission and Governance, Institutional Commitment and Resources, Curriculum and Teaching-Learning Practices, and Aggregate Student and Faculty Outcomes for continuing accreditation. Accreditation was a two-year process, involving self study and a site visit by a team of reviewers.

The LSUHSC School of Nursing met all of the standards and the reviewers had no compliance concerns about the school’s programs. The Commission made particular note of the revised curriculum, initiated in 2007 with input from faculty, students, and stakeholders. The curriculum now integrates clinical simulation lab experiences to enhance the development of critical thinking skills, and interdisciplinary collaboration. Alumni spoke of how the program had prepared them for practice in an interdisciplinary environment and commented that the program had instilled in them values of professionalism and leadership. The school has also transitioned from an evaluation plan to a quality improvement plan. Also noted were the tremendous value of the incorporation of basic science courses into the undergraduate curriculum and the full resources of a large, comprehensive academic health sciences center, as well as the school’s leadership in the community, state, and nation.

"We are gratified that the comments about our School of Nursing were so positive and affirm the changes, direction and leadership of the school," said Dr. Larry Hollier, Chancellor of LSU Health Sciences Center New Orleans. "The LSU Health Sciences Center New Orleans School of Nursing plays a critical role in producing highly qualified nurses for the community and state."

LSU Health Sciences Center New Orleans School of Nursing is the only nursing school in Louisiana within an academic health sciences center. The largest of the LSUHSC schools in terms of enrollment with nearly a thousand students this fall, it offers bachelor’s, master’s, and doctor of nursing science degrees. The school also offers graduate programs in nurse anesthesia, family and neonatal nurse practitioners, clinical nurse specialist (adult and psychiatric/mental health), community/public health nursing, nurse educator, and nursing administration.

"The successful accreditation results are evidence of the diligence and dedication of the faculty, staff and nursing students to document our compliance and success with national accreditation standards," said Dr. Demetrius Porche, Dean of the LSUHSC School of Nursing.

The Commission on Collegiate Nursing Education (CCNE) is an autonomous accrediting agency, contributing to the improvement of the public's health. The Commission ensures the quality and integrity of baccalaureate, graduate, and residency programs in nursing. The Commission serves the public interest by assessing and identifying programs that engage in effective educational practices. As a voluntary, self-regulatory process, CCNE accreditation supports and encourages continuing self-assessment by nursing programs and supports continuing growth and improvement of collegiate professional education and post-baccalaureate nurse residency programs.
