The Louisiana State University Health Sciences Center at Shreveport School Medicine Department of Emergency Medicine is seeking a Residency Program Director for our ACGME-accredited Emergency Medicine residency program.  LSU Health Shreveport is home to the only medical school in north Louisiana and one of only three in the State of Louisiana.

The Emergency Department is currently 54 beds with 23 faculty, 37 residents, and 5 APP’s servicing greater than 60,000 annual visits and the regions only Level 1 trauma center.  The hospital is a primary stroke center with thrombectomy certification and the regional burn center.

The LSU Health Shreveport faculty and residents provider tertiary level care through our joint partnership with Ochsner LSU Health Shreveport. The ED services a patient population throughout the entire region of North Louisiana, South Arkansas, and East Texas.

General Description:

This person will serve as the Program Director of the LSU Health Shreveport Emergency Medicine Residency Program. We are a 3-year, ACGME Accredited Residency Program that began in 2004 and currently accepts 9 residents per year. Along with the Department of Family Medicine, we administer a combined 5 year EM/FM program taking two residents per year.  The Program Director is responsible for meeting the highest standards of excellence in graduate medical education.  This position reports to the Department Chair and Executive Director of Medical Services /DIO and provides oversight and leadership to the APDs and Program Administrator.

Program Director Responsibilities:

  • Meet or exceed the ACGME program requirements for Emergency Medicine residency programs
  • Lead continuous program improvement and innovation
  • Be a role model for professionalism
  • Demonstrate a collaborative management style
  • Foster a supportive learning environment
  • Timely completion of ACGME WebADS and LSU Health-Shreveport annual program evaluation
  • Lead the Program Evaluation Committee (PEC)
  • Participate in the Clinical Competency Committee (CCC) meetings
  • Oversee the resident evaluation process and semi-annual reviews
  • Work with the program administrator and department liaisons to gather resident practice data
  • Monitor the resident experience on clinical rotations
  • Work with APDs on curriculum development and optimizing the educational sessions
  • Monitor learner performance, progress and professionalism. Develop necessary action plans and remediation plans
  • Work with residents and faculty to develop a residency recruitment plan (i.e. residency fairs, social media presence, application screening, interview experience, and ranking committee)
  • Oversee the residency program budget and work with department chair to fund strategic initiatives
  • Address the following issues in a timely manner: resident and faculty concerns, institutional reports, and institutional/departmental changes that affect graduate medical education
  • Oversee resident career development
  • Participate as a core faculty member in the EM residency program including: giving lectures, participating in scholarly activity, attending faculty meeting, resident conference, and other residency related meetings and events

Career Development:

  • Regular attendance at LSU Health-Shreveport quarterly program director meetings
  • Active participation in at least one GME/committee/subcommittee
  • Yearly attendance at the national Council of Residency Director (CORD) in Emergency Medicine annual meeting
  • Active participation in professional medical organization at state, regional, or national level including: CORD, SAEM, AAEM, and LA State Medical Society

Clinical:

  • Work clinical duties as directed by the Emergency Medicine Departmental Chairperson
  • Supervise residents, medical students, and others as required of attending physicians

Applicant must meet the following:

  • MD, DO, or MD/PhD
  • Completion of accredited Emergency Medicine residency program and current ABEM or ABOEM certification
  • Must have at least three years of documented educational and/or administrative experience
  • Must have a minimum of three years’ experience as core faculty
  • Must demonstrate active involvement in scholarly activity
  • Will need to maintain appointment with the LSU Health - Shreveport School of Medicine
  • Will need to maintain Hospital privileges at Ochsner LSU Health Shreveport
