LONI has announced QB-2, LONI's newest HPC cluster. This cluster is a state-of-the-art upgrade to the original QueenBee cluster. QB-2 is a 1.5 PetaFlop Peak Performance NVIDIA GPU accelerated cluster. QB-2 has 480 nodes each with 20 Intel Ivybridge 2.8 GHz cores, 64 GB of RAM, and two NVIDIA K20X GPUs. There are 16 nodes that have two Intel Xeon Phi 7120P co-processors, 4 nodes that have two NVIDIA K40 GPUs, and 4 big memory nodes with 1.5 TF of RAM.

According to Lonnie Leger, Executive Director of LONI, QB2 landed 46th in the world in the November 2014 edition of the TOP500. You can read more at http://top500.org/list/2014/11.

QB-2 is now open in friendly user mode (qb.loni.org). LONI welcomes the LONI community to use the new cluster, but notes that everyone should realize that QB-2 is still undergoing some deployment and is a work-in-progress. If you see problems, please report them to sys-help@loni.org so that they can fix them. The cluster may need to be taken off-line occasionally to makefixes during this friendly user period. There is a QB-2 user guide on the LONI website: http://hpc.loni.org/docs/guides.php?system=QB2

With the deployment of this cluster, LONI will start decommissioning the older 5-teraflop clusters located at the LONI member sites. LONI’s plan is to stop job submissions on Painter, Poseidon, Oliver, and Louie on December 1, 2014. Shortly thereafter these clusters will be powered down. Eric will remain on-line for an extended period of time. Please make plans to move the files you wish to keep off these clusters to save them.

If you have any questions or concerns, please contact us by sending email to sys-help@loni.org.

Apple is releasing iOS 8 on September 17 (TODAY!)

Apple is also releaseing new iOS 8 smartphones on September 19th. Changes in iOS 8 require changes in Citrix Receiver for proper operation. Citrix is committed to providing a Receiver for iOS update with full support of iOS 8 to enable users to upgrade to iOS 8 shortly after its availability. Customers are advised to update to iOS 8 when the Receiver update is available.

This document provides answers to questions customers or users might have regarding our Citrix Receiver for iOS as they upgrade to the new Apple iOS 8 or acquire new iOS 8 devices.

FAQ

What is the Citrix recommendation to customers using Receiver on iOS devices?

Citrix recommends that customers should not upgrade to the new iOS 8 until we release a fully compatible version of Receiver for iOS 8.

How will users of Receiver and XenApp and XenDesktop be impacted?

The currently available Citrix Receiver (version 5.9) will not properly function on iOS 8 devices. Users will be impacted only if they upgrade to iOS 8 before Citrix makes available Receiver 5.9.1, the update that will be fully compatible with iOS 8.

What happens if a user upgrades to iOS 8 with Receiver 5.9 already installed?

For users with Receiver 5.9 running iOS 6 or 7 who update to iOS 8, they will be able to use virtual applications that they have already been using (subscribed apps). However, they will lose the ability to add new apps to Receiver when using either StoreFront or Web Interface. Instead, users can manually open subscribed apps in Receiver 5.9 from within Safari.

When will the iOS 8-compatible Receiver be available?

Citrix is doing everything in its power to release the update as soon as possible. Apple’s new iOS 8 introduces many amazing new features and adds hundreds of new APIs, some of which required changes in Receiver. Citrix is readying an update, designated Receiver 5.9.1, suitable for operation with iOS 8 (and iOS 6/7). It will be available for download from the App Store in early October.

What happens if a user purchases a new iOS 8 device, or upgrades to iOS 8, and then installs Receiver 5.9 ahead of the update?

Users of Receiver for iOS purchasing a new iOS 8 device—or upgrading to iOS 8 and then installing Receiver 5.9—will be able to configure Receiver 5.9 but will not be able to add or use applications. However, users can manually open subscribed apps in Receiver 5.9 from within Safari.

How will users learn of the Receiver for iOS update?

When available on the App Store, users who have installed Receiver will automatically be notified. Customers can also check for updates about availability of Receiver 5.9.1 on the following Citrix support page:

http://www.citrix.com/support/receiver-iOS8 .

If a user upgrades to iOS8 and can no longer use Receiver, is there any recourse?

The only recourse is to wait for the Receiver update.

We have found an issue in the PeopleSoft Financials PS9FSRPT database that the DBAs are working to correct. The process scheduler will be unavailable this morning while they address the issue. The data in RPT is an accurate reflection of last night’s backup, however, you will not be able to run reports while they fix the scheduler problem. We will send notice once the scheduler is available,

The PS9FSPRD database is unaffected by this issue. We apologize for any inconvenience.

• The N.O. HCSD Metro Ethernet circuit will be relocated to another module.
• The N.O. Router uplink will be relocated to another module.

Impact:

The hospitals with backup circuits should experience little or no downtime. Downtime is expected to be less than one hour for the clinics that do not have redundant connections. Sites impacted are:
• Bogalusa
• Lallie Kemp
• Washington St Tammany
• Depaul Mental Health Unit
• ESU
• OB/GYN Clinic
• HOP Clinic
• LB Landry
• Daughters of Charity
• St Thomas

06/18/2014 - 04:00 PM

On Wednesday, June 18th, from about 5:00 pm – 10:00 pm, a SAN engineer will be working on site with us at DPS to install new drive enclosures to the New Orleans “Exchange SAN” and the HCSD “Pharmacy/Document Imaging SAN”. This is part of a proactive service that is being provided at no cost, in order replace a number of existing hard drives that have been determined to be at risk of shorter than usual life expectancy by their manufacturer. The suspect drives will be replaced with brand new drives that are expected to have normal life expectancy. (This is more or less a “voluntary recall” being orchestrated by the drive manufacturer and Dell, at no cost to us.) No downtime is anticipated as a result of this maintenance. After the new drive enclosures have been installed, existing data will gradually be mirrored/migrated from the existing drives to the replacement drives over a period of 1 – 2 weeks, as a low-priority, low-impact process. The data migration is not expected to have any noticeable effect on performance. Once all the data has been migrated, we will remove the old drives and prepare them for destruction. Then Dell will return at a later date to reclaim the empty drive enclosures. Please let me know any questions.

06/17/2014 - 7:30 PM

Pelican Staff, IT Directors and Pelican Champions,

Tonight, June 17th at 8pm the network team will be updating firmware on Network devices that will affect EPIC access.   This will cause a disconnect of up to 15 minutes.   We will notify those users that have an active session  at 7:50pm that they will be losing their session at 8.

I won’t call a downtime unless something goes wrong and the upgrade has to be backed out.

06/03/2014 - 7:30 PM

During the maintenance window on June 7, 2014, from 3:00 am to 6:00 am,  the Network and Security groups will perform the following tasks:

Scope:

Backbone Circuits Move:

  • The N.O. – B.R. long-haul Ethernet circuit will be relocated to a different Cisco system.
  • The N.O. – B.R. LONI MPLS connection will also be relocated to a different Cisco system.

Firewall Memory Upgrade:

  • The memory in the firewall appliances in Baton Rouge will be upgraded

Impact:

Since the circuits and firewalls are configured to provide redundancy, we do not expect any significant downtime during this maintenance. However, during the failover of the circuits and firewalls, the users may experience brief outages (up to 30 seconds) when accessing the following:

  •          New Orleans data center
  •          Baton Rouge data center
  •          Commodity Internet/Internet 2
  •          VPN Connections
  •          Remote login (remote.lsuhsc.edu)

Should you have any questions or concerns about this maintenance, please feel free to contact us.

05/30/2014 - 06:36 PM

05/05/2014 - 04:30 PM

About 3:05 PM today Monday May 5, 2014 we incorrectly set an MX record that caused email to bounce for email sent from the internet to anyone @LSUHSC.edu. Internal email should not have been affected. The problem was corrected at 3:30 PM, but the MX record has a TTL of 1 hour so we expect that some emails could have continued to bounce until 4:05 PM. The problem should be corrected now.

04/16/2014 - 11:40

XP Issue Update:

Microsoft reports that its latest Definition update, 1.171.64.0, corrects this problem.  We have run the update on test systems with success.

This update has been approved and is being pushed out through the SCCM server but may take another two hours to update on all systems.

The definition file is in the V:\Pub\sccm\definition folder.  You can run the mpam-fe.exe to manually install the update.  Note that this is a silent install and can take a few minutes to complete.  You can monitor the installation in task manager.  While running it will display mpam-fe.exe in the processes tab.

Let us know if you have any questions with the process.

04/16/2014 - 10:30

Attention Supporters, re: XP issue:

We are aware of issues with XP workstations that were generated by Microsoft Forefront and Endpoint Protection anti-malware software.   We have contacted Microsoft and they are in the process of gathering a work around for us.   In the meantime, we have one work around that was tested and can be used until a permanent solution is found.

For now, we are noticing that if you log into the system and ride out the errors it will stop reporting an error. This may take 15 minutes or so. Our test systems have then allowed the user to select ok on the pop up box and work normally. A few supporters have reported that selecting either OK or Cancel has resulted in a computer system locking up so have instructed their users to ignore the box and work around it. This is not optimum but does allow work to continue.

We will send out updates, as we have them.

04/15/2014 - 09:30

To troubleshoot the problem with the UPS the technician needs to route power to the UPS and eliminating the bypass currently in place.  In order to route power through the UPS again requires that the data center be powered down.  A time will be scheduled for the outage in order for troubleshooting to continue.

01/29/2014 - 2:15PM

Applications are running successfully in the New Orleans data center.  A technician from Nolan Power is scheduled to be on-site at 4:00 p.m. to check the UPS.

It is unknown whether an additional downtime will be needed to switch back to the UPS once repairs have been completed.

01/29/2014 - 8:45 AM

UPS has been bypassed and power has been restored to the RCB data center.  The systems are coming on line and will have to be tested, but network connectivity has been restored.

The UPS is still na issue and the problem will be investigated.

01/29/2014 - 7:00 AM

The LSUHSC electrician is onsite at the New Orleans data center to address what appears to be a problem with a breaker providing a power feed to the UPS causing a power outage to the New Orleans data center. The DPS data center housing our production equipment is not experiencing any issue.

Some Outage Impacts to Users:

  • Access to LONI and LaNet from the RCB
  • Access to the Dental School, the LHN Clinics, Children’s Hospital, and the Foundation
  • ILH, LJC, LAK, BMC/WST are experiencing degraded access to Epic and RIS/PACS
  • The School of Nursing and The School of Public Health have several servers in the RCB data center.
  • Research servers and SANs located in the RCB data center.

01/17/2014 - 09:39 AM

This Saturday, we are preparing to upgrade Exchange to the latest rollup - RU4 for Exchange 2010 SP3. Most of the upgrade process should be transparent to the users, due to the redundancy for most server roles. We do anticipate about a minute of downtime for each Exchange database as it is failed over to another node, and again when it is failed back. Since we need to coordinate the effort with Shreveport and HCSD supporters, we will be doing this maintenance on Saturday, beginning at 8:00 am in N.O., with the mailbox server updates probably starting before noon at all three sites.

1/16/2014 - 09:32 AM

Pelican Staff, IT Directors and Pelican Champions,

Our next scheduled downtime will be January 17th at 1am-2am. This is to apply the required SU patches to both EPIC Cache and Hyperspace. Code Pelican will be activated during this time. Make sure your BCAs are up to date with the latest reports. Also, make sure the ADT staff is ready during this time period to do ADT recovery.

You will have Read Only and BCA reports during the downtime.

01/12/2013 - 07:33AM

The migration of the Archived File Placeholders completed overnight. This maintenance is complete.

01/11/2014 - 05:50AM

The migration of all files, minus the archived file placeholders, has completed.   All shares have been recreated.   If anyone has any trouble with mapped drives they should be advised to log off and log back on.

The migration of archived file placeholders to their new permanent location will begin shortly, and the archived file placeholders should gradually reappear in users’ mapped drives throughout the day.

01/10/2014 - 07:10 PM

On Wednesday, 1/15, beginning at 10:00 PM, the LSUHSC-NO email archiving services will be brought down in order to apply a service pack to the email archive servers.  The expected downtime is six hours.  While the email archive services are down, users will not be able to access items in the LSUHSC-NO email archive.  Notice will be sent to LSUHSC-Support once the email archive services are back up

01/08/2014 - 1:35PM

A subset of LSUHSC-NO departmental file shares will be offline for maintenance on Saturday, January 11, from 5:00 – 6:00 am.   (These are often referred to as “mapped network drives”, “T-drives” or “U-drives”, etc.)  The affected file shares will be inaccessible from approximately 5:00 am to 6:00 am.  All file shares should be back on line by 6:00 am.   However, Archived File Placeholders located in these shares will initially appear to be “missing” immediately after 6:00 am.   Placeholders in these shares will gradually “reappear” throughout much of Saturday and possibly into Sunday.   Most placeholders represent files that have not been accessed for more than a year.   If you need to access an archived file over the weekend, and cannot wait for the file placeholder to reappear, please contact the Help Desk.   Our Server Group has utilities that can be used to recall targeted archived files as needed.   Only shares that pertain to the following departments/areas will be affected by this maintenance:

   VCAA

Administration
Animal Care
Campus Health
Financial Aid
Graduate Studies
Library
Registrar
Research
Technology Transfer

·        VCIS

Environmental Health and Safety
Physical Plant
University Police

·        Auxiliary Enterprises

·        Human Development Center

Everyone,

The HMM pharmacy system will be going down, TONIGHT, Wednesday January 8th at 10PM, to update the FDB for November. Expect a 2 hour down time. Watch your emails to remind you when to log out and when to log back into the system. Not remaining out of the HMM system during maintenance could prolong the downtime.

Utilize your downtime procedures. Reminder: Alert other departments who will be affected. (Nursing, Respiratory, and consider alerting local IT and others that may be beneficial)

1. Patient Touch (PSS) will not receive any new orders for patients. (Inpatient ADT will come from Siemens, so it will NOT be affected). Nurses will still be able to document with Patent Touch device for existing orders.

2. Pyxis will not receive new admit information nor any orders from HMM. ( 24hr facilities place on override)

Thank you for your cooperation
