Student Financial Aid

The Student Financial Aid Office administers grants, loans, scholarships, and part-time employment. Students interested in receiving financial aid should contact this Office well in advance of their expected enrollment. Each student's need for aid will be evaluated on information supplied and in accordance with Financial Aid Policy of the Health Sciences Center. Representatives of the Office are available for consultation with all candidates for admission and with students.

Although the primary responsibility for financing an education rests with the student and the student's immediate family, it is recognized that many students require additional assistance in order to meet their educational costs.

Awards from aid programs funded by the Federal or State government are administered according to laws and regulations governing those programs. Priority is given to students with the greatest documented need whose completed applications are received by the appropriate deadline.

Dear Students,

The U.S. Department of Education recently informed us of an impending increase in Federal Direct Loan origination fees due to the federal budget sequester (mandatory across the board spending reductions).  While the increases in Federal Direct Subsidized/Unsubsidized (Stafford) and Federal Direct PLUS/Graduate PLUS fees are only a small fraction of 1% of the loan amounts, they will result in slightly lower net loan disbursements and necessitate cancellation and reprocessing of previously approved 2013-14 academic year loans with first disbursements on or after December 1st 2013.  The change will not affect second and subsequent disbursements of loans with first disbursements prior to 12/1/13.

Cancelled and reprocessed PLUS and Graduate PLUS loans will be subject to a new credit evaluation in most cases, with approval contingent on meeting federal credit standards.  New Endorser Agreements will be required for borrowers needing an endorser to qualify for PLUS/Graduate PLUS.  Summer Graduate PLUS loans for nurse anesthetist students are the largest cohort of loans that must be cancelled and reprocessed.

Pending undisbursed loans with Fall 2013 projected first disbursements will be cancelled on or about 11/27/13.  Please act promptly to finalize Fall ’13 pending offered loans.  The student financial aid office has sent multiple missing information emails for pending loans lacking student acceptance, promissory note completion and/or required entrance counseling.

Sorry for any inconvenience and confusion as we work through these federally mandated changes together.
