The Constitution
of Louisiana in Article VIII, Section 7, establishes the
legal designation of the management board for the LSU
System as the Board of Supervisors of Louisiana State
University and Agricultural and Mechanical College. That
constitutional designation is reiterated in Title 17,
Sections 1453A and 3215 of the Louisiana Revised
Statutes.
As a result of
long-standing and generally accepted custom and
practice, and to avoid confusion with a component
institution which is also designated, in part, Louisiana
State University and Agricultural and Mechanical
College, the management board has become commonly known
and referred to as the “Board of Supervisors of the
Louisiana State University System” and the system has
become commonly known and referred to as the “Louisiana
State University System.”
Title 17, Section
3215 of the Louisiana Revised Statutes sets forth the
names of component institutions under the management of
the Board of Supervisors of the Louisiana State
University Agricultural and Mechanical College.
Title 17, Section
3215(1) refers to: “Louisiana State University and
Agricultural and Mechanical College, located at Baton
Rouge and designated as the premier flagship university
for the state.”
As a result of
long-standing and generally accepted custom and
practice, “Louisiana State University Agricultural and
Mechanical College, located at Baton Rouge . . .” has
become known and referred to as “Louisiana State
University.” Title 17, Section 3215(7) refers to: “The
Center for Agricultural Sciences and Rural Development.”
As a result of
long-standing and generally accepted custom and
practice, “The Center for Agricultural Sciences and
Rural Development” has become known and referred to as
“Louisiana State University Agricultural Center.”
In each instance,
the abbreviation for Louisiana State University is
commonly known and accepted as “LSU.”
