CM-36 - Guidelines for the responsible use of Alcohol at the LSU

- Scope
This policy applies to all LSUHSC faculty, staff, residents,
and students.
- Purpose
The excessive use of intoxicating beverages may adversely
affect the academic and professional performance of faculty,
staff, residents, and students. The purpose of this policy is to
establish guidelines for responsible use of alcohol at LSUHSC
and LSUHSC sponsored functions.
- Policy
The use of alcohol is prohibited in classroom buildings,
laboratories, auditoriums, library buildings, faculty and
administrative offices, athletic facilities, and all other
public campus areas. Alcohol may be served for special events on
campus sponsored by the institution with written authorization
from the Dean, Chancellor, or their authorized designee and when
the following guidelines for responsible use of alcohol are
followed. The guidelines also apply to the use of alcohol at LSUHSC sponsored functions off campus.
- Guidelines
- The sponsor of the event must implement precautionary
measures to insure that alcoholic beverages are not accessible
or served to persons under the legal drinking age or to persons
who appear intoxicated.
- The sponsor of the event must limit direct access of
alcoholic beverages to the person(s) designated as the server(s).
A server is defined as an individual who has undergone approved
server training and/or works for a caterer.
- The consumption of alcoholic beverages is to be permitted
only within the approved area designated for the event.
- Nonalcoholic beverages must be available at the same place as
the alcoholic beverages and featured as prominently as the
alcoholic beverages.
- A reasonable portion of the budget for the event shall be
designated for the purchase of food items.
- Drinking contests are prohibited at all LSUHSC activities and
functions.
- Advertisements for any LSUHSC event where alcoholic beverages
are served shall mention the availability of nonalcoholic
beverages as prominently as alcohol.
- Alcohol must not be used as an inducement to participate in a
campus event.
- Promotional materials including advertising for any LSUHSC
event shall not make reference to the quantity of alcoholic
beverages (such as the number of kegs of beer) available.
- The LSUHSC University Police Department will be notified of
all functions on campus at which alcoholic beverages will be
served.
- The rules and regulations of the residence hall(s) shall
govern the use of alcohol within the residence hall(s).
- With respect to the possession and consumption of alcoholic
beverages, state law will be strictly enforced at all times on
all property controlled by LSUHSC.
- For functions that include the sale of alcoholic beverages,
all the appropriate permits shall be obtained from the Alcohol
Beverage Control Board.
