Medical laboratory scientists (medical technologists /medical laboratory scientists) perform analytical tests on blood and body fluids. As vital members of the health care team, they provide information necessary for the prevention, diagnosis, and treatment of disease.

“The cure for terrible autoimmune disorders, cancers, and other debilitating diseases is dependent on the complex testing done by clinical lab scientists,” adds Dr. Brocato. “It is important that we have well-trained individuals.”

A native of Maringouin, LA, Jarreau put herself through Southeastern Louisiana University, graduating with a Bachelor of Science degree in Biology in 2020. She worked to save money to continue her education and then enrolled in the MLS program at LSU Health New Orleans.

“The Department of MLS is very excited for Alex Jarreau to receive the national American Proficiency Institute Scholarship,” notes Dr. Brocato. “Alex has been a hardworking student throughout this program and is very deserving of this award.”

Now in its 15th year, the API Scholarship Program provides funding to students as they pursue their clinical laboratory science education. “The future of the profession shines bright with these determined students,” said Daniel C. Edson, API President.
