Institutional Animal Care and Use Committee

ANIMAL RESEARCH TRAINING REQUIREMENTS

No individual can participate in an IACUC approved research protocol without first completing both IACUC-required AND institution-required training courses as described below.

IACUC-Required Training

IACUC-required training include courses adminstered by both LSUHSC-NO (HSC) providers, Compliance and Training System ("CATS")   and the Department of Animal Care (DOAC), as well as the external training program Collaborative Institutional Training Initiative (CITI). Information on how to access these systems is provided at the end of this page. Some courses (highlighted in the next two tables) are required for all individuals working with live animals whereas other courses depend on the specific animal species and/or procedures used in the research. After initial training, the IACUC and/or veterinarians can require anyone to repeat or take additional training as determined necessary.

Institution-Required Training & Disclosure

LSUHSC-NO, under the purview of the Office of Compliance Programs and the Office of Research, requires additional training for individuals involved in research. The Office of Research is responsible for confirming compliance with the training and disclosure requirements for all HSC investigators including those listed in the initial application and those added after study approval through an amendment request. The required areas of training and disclosure relevant to the conduct of animal research are listed in the table below.

CATS CATS  is a web-based training program managed by the Office of Compliance Programs (OCP). Research-specific trainings (i.e., Occupational Health, Laboratory Animal Allergies, and COI in Research) are self-assigned by users as described here.  Bloodborne Pathogen training is assigned on the front-end by OCP. More information can be found on the OCP website and the self-assign user guide.
DOAC Please contact Dr. Leslie Birke at lbirke@lsuhsc.edu
CITI Instructions for creating a CITI account and affiliating with LSUHSC-NO are provided by CITI Program. Once an account is created, HSC investigators may log in to CITI using HSC credentials (single sign-on) and select training courses as described in this document.
Kuali Annual COI disclosures are submitted through the Kuali Research COI module. Information about COI disclosure and access to Kuali Research COI module is found here.
