Accessible Headings

Structure your document using paragraph styles (for documents) or heading tags (for web pages). Headings make the structure of your documents accessible to screen readers while improving both scannability and maintainability.

It isn't enough to make text big and bold to look like headings. Headings need to be formatted as headings. The use of heading levels in a logical order enables readers to easily navigate through the document to find information.

Formatting heading in Moodle:

  1. On the Moodle course home page, click Turn editing on.

  2. Click on Edit and select Edit settings.

  3. Select the text to be made into a heading.

  4. Click the Paragraph styles button in the text editor and choose a large, medium or small heading as appropriate.

  5. Heading (large) is like the title of a book and there is just one Heading (large) per page. Heading (medium)s are like chapter titles. Heading (small)s are sub-sections of those chapters, and so on.
