Dermatology Procedures
Semester: Fall
Programs: Medicine and Physician Assistant
Description: Developed in 2016, the Family Medicine program was interested in providing a hand-on learning experience to demonstrate procedures commonly done in family medicine clinics. Medical students (voluntary - 2nd year, 1st semester) and Physician Assistant students (required - 1st year, 3rd semester) are provided a lecture on common dermatology conditions and procedures, and then divide into small groups to practice using various pieces of equipment. Small groups are representative of both programs. Student groups are provided a patient case and are asked to provide recommended treatment options and justification for each recommendation. Interprofessional discussions target comparison of overall academic and post-graduation training and building relationships.

Temporomandibular Dysfunction
Semester: Fall
Programs: Dental and Physical Therapy
Description: Developed in 2016, this IPE experience has transitioned from a small and large group discussions occuring in a classroom to student demonstration of their skills and case-based discussions occuring in the dental clinic environment. Dental (required - 3rd year) and Physical Therapy students (required - 2nd year) read temporomandibular disorder literature published from the opposite profession and discuss findings and clarify unfamiliar terms. Following a demonstration activity, students apply their knowledge to a patient case focused on roles, treatment interventions and collaboration.

Urinalysis
Semester: Fall
Programs: Clinical Laboratory Science and Physician Assistant
Description: Developed in 2016, this required IPE experience provides Clinical Laboratory Science (1st year, 3rd semester) and Physician Assistant (1st year, 3rd semester) students the opportunity to highlight the communication needed between the two professions. Using a case, CLS students demonstrate their skills in conducting a miscrospopic urinalysis, while PA students discuss their decision-making process in ordering labs.
