What is Interprofessional Education (IPE)?

Our Center for Interprofessional Education and Collaborative Practice (CIPECP) has adopted the World Health Organization's definition of Interprofessional Education (IPE):

“Interprofessional education occurs when students from two or more professions learn about, from, and with each other to enable effective collaboration and improve health outcomes. Once students understand how to work interprofessionally, they are ready to enter the workplace as a member of the collaborative practice team. This is a key step in moving health systems from fragmentation to a position of strength.”

While at LSU Health Sciences Center, students are partnered with students from other healthcare professions to acquire a more thorough understanding of each other's roles and responsibilities. Over the course of their education, they work alongside one another to develop teamwork skills within and outside of the classroom. The knowledge and skills acquired better help prepare them to work effectively in their future careers to improve patient heathcare experiences and outcomes.

What is Interprofessional Collaborative Practice (IPCP)?

Our Center for Interprofessional Education and Collaborative Practice (CIPECP) has also adopted the World Health Organization's definition of Interprofessional Collaborative Practice (ICPC):

"Collaborative practice happens when multiple health workers from different professional backgrounds work together with patients, families, carers and communities to deliver the highest quality of care across settings."

The goal of our interprofessional education program here at LSU Health Sciences Center is to provide students with the necessary knowledge and skills to work collaboratively with other healthcare professionals in their future careers.

"It seems to me that the total sum of functions necessary to provide the health services efficiently and effectively to all of the people requires a degree of teamwork between the various and growing categories of health professionals which exists only in rudimentary form now."
