Single IPE Experiences Using Simulation
Advanced Cardiac Life Support
Semester: Summer, Fall and Spring
Programs: Medicine, Nurse Anesthesia and Respiratory Therapy
Description: Established via a HRSA grant in 2014, this IPE experience has been sustained since the 2017-18 academic year. Medical (required - 4th year), nurse anesthesia (required - 2nd year) and respiratory therapy students (required - 2nd year) use a high-fidelity simulation environment to practice Advanced Cardiac Life Support (ACLS). This interprofessional experience includes an initial experience, a debriefing session and a resimulation. Faculty use the debriefing sessions to enhance student learning in clinical, teamwork and TeamSTEPPS® communication skills.

Basic Life Support
Semester: Fall and Spring
Programs: Medicine and Undergraduate Nursing
Description: Established during the 2017-18 academic year. Medical (3rd year) and undergraduate nursing students (3rd year) use a high-fidelity simulation environment to practice Basic Life Support (BLS). This interprofessional experience includes a simulation experience and a debriefing session and focuses on teamwork and communication skills, such as closed-loop feedback and SBAR.

Obstetric Emergencies and Delivery of High-Risk Neonate
Semester: Fall
Programs: Graduate Medical Education (OB/GYN), Respiratory Therapy and Nursing
Description: Developed in 2017 with the traditional undergraduate nursing and respiratory therapy programs, this simulation focused on roles, teamwork and communication needed during obstetric emergency deliveries. Expanded in 2018 to include residents from the OB/GYN Graduate Medical Education department, medical residents, and nursing and respiratory therapy students engage in interprofessional learning through the use of high-fidelity simulation mannequins.

Patient Transfers, Medical Lines, and Respiratory Therapy Equipment
Semester: Spring
Programs: Occupational Therapy, Respiratory Therapy and Undergraduate Nursing
Description: Developed in 2014 with the traditional undergraduate nursing and occupational therapy programs, this simulation included patient safety as related to patient transfers with multiple medical lines. In 2017, the respiratory therapy program was included and the focus expanded patient safety aspects as related to respiratory therapy equipment.
