Single IPE Experiences in a Clinical Setting

Neurological Clinic

Semester: Fall and Spring

Programs: Occupational Therapy and Physical Therapy

Description: The Neurological Clinic was established in 2015 and serves persons living with chronic neurological conditions. Occupational Therapy (required - 1st year, fall semester and 2nd year, spring semester) and Physical Therapy students (required - 2nd year fall and spring semesters) have the opportunity to apply didactic knowledge and practice assessment and treatment clinical and collaborative skills within a safe learning environment. In 2018, the Clinic integrated an interprofessional collaborative practice component between the two programs. Examples included an interprofessional history intake session and a dedicated 15 minute handoff time between discipline sessions.

Oral Health Provider Roles

Semester: Spring

Programs: Dental and Dental Hygiene

Description: Developed in 2017, this intraprofessional experience includes Dental Hygiene students (required - 1st year) observing a Dental student presenting a treatment plan to a patient/family or assisting a dental student in gathering assessment data during an initial patient evaluation or treatment appointment. The focus of this learning experience is communicating roles and responsibilities. Both third year Dental and first year Dental Hygiene students discuss professional roles and responsibilities after the patient evaluation or treatment appointment.

Peer Review Feedback

Semester: Fall

Programs: Dental and Dental Hygiene

Description: Developed in 2017, this intraprofessional experience includes Dental Hygiene students (required - 2nd year) observing an oral diagnosis clinic session led by a Dental student. Observations include person-centered communication and focus on health literacy. Both third year Dental and second year Dental Hygiene students complete a validated instrument measuring perceptions of providing person-centered health information. Dental Hygiene students provide peer review feedback to the Dental students and the Dental students reflect on the feedback received.
