Issues with Wireless

With so many students returning to campus for the Fall semester, we’re seeing a number of issues accessing the wireless network. If the directions that the Library or Nursing School have posted aren’t working out. Try not checking off any of the certificate authorities. When the popup box comes up to accept the security certificate, wait a few moments before clicking OK. It seems like if you click through the boxes too quickly, you end up stuck in a login loop.

If this doesn’t work, we can try to help in the Library or you can hunt down a computer supporter in your school.

Top Doctors from New Orleans Magazine

Once a year, New Orleans Magazine publishes a list of the Top Doctors in the greater New Orleans area; this list is compiled from a database created by Best Doctors in America. This year there were 564 listings from 66 specialties; the list is created by asking area physicians who they would want to treat an ill family member. Two LSUHSC physicians were featured Kim Edward LeBlanc and Cleveland Moore. Congratulations to everyone on the list!

Awards for two dental faculty members

Congratulations to Drs. Janet Leigh and Michael O’Brian who were recently awarded two very prestigious national awards.

Janet Leigh, BDS, DMD, Chair of the Department of Oral Medicine and Radiology at LSU Health Sciences Center New Orleans School of Dentistry, is one of ten Health Policy Fellows selected by the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation?é?« (RWJF) for 2009-10. She is the first dentist to be selected since 1999. The award comes with a grant in the amount of $165,000 for the residential stay, travel, research, conferences, and other leadership development activities.

Michael E. O?óÔé¼ÔäóBrien DDS, JD, Clinical Associate Professor and Director of Predoctoral Studies in the Department of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery at LSU Health Sciences Center New Orleans School of Dentistry, has been selected as the recipient of the 2009 Daniel M. Laskin Award by the American Association of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgeons. The award recognizes the “Outstanding Predoctoral Educator in OMS” (Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery).

$1.3 Mil from NCI

The NOLA.com website just released a story on LSUHSC’s own Eduardo Davila. Dr. Davila, assistant professor pediatrics, has been awarded a $1.3 million grant over 5 years by the National Cancer Institute to study new immunotherapies, including a vaccine, for cancer. Library Commons GRAND OPENING!

The day is finally here!

The new Library Commons, located on the third floor of the Resource Center, will open tomorrow, July 15th, at 7:00 a.m. The Commons also houses a coffee bar serving Starbucks which will have coffee, drinks, yogurt, pre-made salads, sandwiches and pastries. The coffee bar will operate from 7:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m. On Wednesday, July 15 ONLY, “Buy a cup of coffee and get a free chocolate covered strawberry.”

The Commons will be open 24/7 for LSUHSC faculty, students and staff. Please enjoy and care for this beautiful new space!!

Pharos Pay for Print is down campus-wide (downtown & Dental). We do not have a timeframe for this outage.

Geaux Tigers!

Congratulations to the LSU Tigers, who defeated the Texas Longhorns 11-4 at the College World Series last night. The title is LSU’s sixth championship and the first since 2000.

Free Health Education & Screening

Next week on Wednesday, July 1st the various schools of LSUHSC will be offering screening for high blood pressure, diabetes, depression, lung function, colorectal cancer and oral cancer, as well as vaccinations and education on a variety of health topics. The event will take place from 1 – 6 p.m. at Grace Episcopal Church, 3700 Canal St. It is part of the Congressman Cao AAA Health Care Initiative. AMC & the Tucker Bill

The LSU Faculty Senate has created a “A Brief Review of the Issues” pertinent to our health sciences center, the proposed Academic Medical Center and state legislative bill HB 830 (the Tucker Bill). This document serves to present information in “a concise form that you can read and then do with what you wish.” It is provided by the Faculty Senate Executive Committee and LSUHSC Faculty Senators, with the support of Chancellor Hollier.

Dental Campus Emergency Closure

The Dental Campus of LSUHSC closed at about 2:30 p.m this afternoon. This closure includes the Dental Library. Contractors working on repaving the parking lot struck a fire hydrant causing all buildings to lose water pressure. Emergency repairs are under way.

Weekend Access to the Ische Library

Access to the elevated walkway from the Roman Street parking garage will be unavailable this weekend (Saturday, May 30th & Sunday, May 31st). To access the Isché Library, please use the first floor entrance in the Nursing/Allied Health Building (1900 Gravier St). Proceed to the 2nd floor elevators and then out to the walkway going back towards the parking garage. Access should be available again by Monday morning at 6 am (June 1st).
