Spring Fling @ the Downtown Campus
Don’t forget the Spring Fling this afternoon; here’s a copy of Chancellor Hollier’s invitation:
I?óÔé¼Ôäód like to personally invite you and your families to our 2009 Spring Fling, our annual team-building event, on April 17th in the 500 block of Bolivar Street. We have been fortunate to receive generous donations from several sponsors to defray the cost of the event. As the end of work schedules and classes varies, the event will be held from 3:30 – 7:30 PM. There will be something for everyone ?óÔé¼ÔÇ£ delicious food and drink, live music from the Boogie Men, an airbrush tattoo artist and clowns with balloons for the little ones. For those of you coming from off campus, free parking will be available in Student Lot 2 (on the corner of Perdido and Bolivar streets). We?óÔé¼Ôäóre grateful to the Campus Federal Credit Union, the Southeast Louisiana Area Health Education Center, and Acadiana Computer Systems for their sponsorship of the event. It promises to be a great time, and I?óÔé¼Ôäóll look forward to seeing you all there!
PayPaw System Maintenance
Baton Rouge has scheduled today for PayPaw system maintenance. All systems that use PayPaw (photocopiers, printing, vending machines, etc.) will have sporadic outages today.
Network Crash
The LSUHSC New Orleans campuses experienced another significant network crash this morning. Services are coming back online. Unfortunately, the Library’s catalog, INNOPAC, is not one of them yet. Stay tuned.

Matchmaker, matchmaker make me a match…
In this case, the matchmaker is the National Residency Matching Program. Match Day ceremonies at medical schools across the country begin at noon today.
Last year, exactly half of the 246 graduating students from Louisiana State University’s medical schools in New Orleans and Shreveport stayed in Louisiana, according to a 2008 article from the Times-Picayune.
Good luck to all our medical students, we hope you get your first choice! Whether you do or don’t, you may want to pick up the book Match Day: Young Doctors in Hell for what is in store for you.
University-Wide Network Issues
If you can read this, then access to the Internet may have been restored. All systems came to a halt at around 2 p.m. today. Computer services is working to restore connectivity, but services have been going up and down all afternoon.
~Edit~ All issues were resolved around 7 p.m. The problem was a series of power issues in Baton Rouge.

Inauguration History
The Library of Congress had created a history of presidential inaugurations page.
To watch today’s inauguration on campus, there are two choices:

Check out the LSUHSC ?óÔé¼ÔÇ£ New Orleans Faculty Publications database for your 2008 publications to make sure yours are included. I check Biological Abstracts, CINAHL, Web of Science, PubMed, SCOPUS, and EMBASE.com for publications from LSUHSC ?óÔé¼ÔÇ£ NO. Books, book chapters, and local and regional conference abstracts are not indexed in these resources and may have been overlooked.
If your 2008 publication is not there, please submit citation information to Kathy Kerdolff, Reference Librarian (kkerdo@lsuhsc.edu).

The LSUHSC Libraries (Dental and Isché) are closed for the Winter Break (university holidays). Both Libraries will re-open on January 2nd at 8 a.m.
Alferez Frieze – Library Commons’ Sculpture
Yesterday another milestone was reached in the completion of the Library Commons. “The Conquest of Yellow Fever” frieze by Enrique Alferez was mounted in a specially prepared wall. (Specially prepared because the frieze weighs about 2 tons.)

The frieze originally hung on the 2nd floor of the original School of Medicine building and was completed sometime before 1933. The frieze was removed from the wall at 1542 Tulane Avenue in 1987 when a proposed drop ceiling would have covered it; the sculpture’s champion was former LSUHSC Libraries Director Judith Caruthers. Sometime before it’s removal it was accidentally painted institutional green (prior to 1961) covering the original aluminum coating (over plaster). It was stored in the Library (both at 1542 and at the then new Resource Center Library, now John P. Isché Library). It was sent to a conservator for restoration in 1999.

The conservator will complete the restoration now that the piece is in place. The frieze will be beautiful addition to the Library Commons.
Burn the Midnight Oil
Remember the Isché Library will be open until midnight tonight (Friday) and tomorrow (Saturday). On Sunday, the Library will open at noon and close again at midnight. Come and get your study on.
Exam Hours @ the Ische Library
Fall Exam Hours start this weekend. The Isché Library will be open until 12 midnight 7 days a week. Additionally, the Library will open at 12 noon on Sundays. These hours will continue until December 18th.
