Global Library of Women’s Medicine

The Global Library of Women’s Medicine is a new free resource featuring over 442 peer-reviewed, full text, searchable chapters on women’s medicine.

“The Global Library of Women?óÔé¼Ôäós Medicine is a unique web library incorporating a range of detailed clinical information across the whole field of women?óÔé¼Ôäós medicine. It consists of 442 main chapters and 53 supplementary chapters, supported by more than 40,000 references, which will be kept permanently up-to-date. The chapters have been written by more than 650 specialists and will reflect some of the very best worldwide opinion. The website has been developed from the six-volume, encyclopedic textbook Gynecology & Obstetrics, which was first published in 1934 and has been edited for the last 30 years by professor John J. Sciarra.”

Though the site is available to the public, medical and health professionals can register for extra features, such as the ability to comment on the text, submit new material, and access videos, medical atlases and laboratory tests.

GLOWM was created in honor of the publisher’s daughter, Abigal Bloomer, who died of breast cancer at age 31.

Use Elevators #3 & 4

To access the Isché Library, please use Resource Center elevators #3 & 4 (the ones closest to Tulane Ave.). Elevators #1 & 2 are unusable for the next few days so that tiling can be completed.

Moving Walls & Tiling

The temporary plywood walls should start moving in the next few days. The new tile for the Library Commons is being placed, so prepare for some changes to the Isché Library entrance.

National Family History Day is part of the Family History Initiative which provides access to a web-based tool called, “My Family Health Portrait.” This tool helps users to organize family history information and then save their history information to their own computer and even share family history information with other family members.

Why Does Everything Taste Bad After You Brush Your Teeth?

If you have no idea why we?óÔé¼Ôäóre pondering that question today, go brush your teeth real quick and grab a drink (orange juice, iced tea, beer?óÔé¼ÔÇØanything except water). Awful, isn?óÔé¼Ôäót it?

    Scientific congresses, old and new

The American Heart Association just wrapped their Scientific Sessions 2008 at the Morial Convention Center, which drew over 30,000 health professionals to the area this week. Meeting abstracts are available online for free in Circulation.

Back in the 1930’s, 3,500 people was big news. A Times-Picayune newspaper clipping from November 11, 1937 announces: “3500 will attend Southern Medics Convention here,” reporting on the 31st meeting of the Southern Medical Association, which met in New Orleans in 1909, 1923 and 1931 as well. In 1949, surgeons from around the world flew into Moisant Airport to attend the 13th Congress of the International Society of Surgery, where for the first time television was used to broadcast over 20 operations to surgeons watching in the nearby Roosevelt Hotel. (Britain’s representative was cautious of the use of video in training, however.) LSU’s own Dr. James D. Rives performed intricate lung surgery in Charity hospital, using WDSU’s facilities. You can view and read more LSU history in our Historic Newspaper Clippings Collection on the Louisiana Digital Library.

    Google & the Flu

Google announced on Tuesday that it was launching Google Flu Trends which will combine flu-related searches that it receives along with information from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) to estimate flu cases in all 50 states. The CDC offers information on Flu Season for consumers as well as Seasonal Flu information for health professionals, parents, and teachers.

According to Google Flu Trends, incidence of the flu in Louisiana is still low. And they even offer a flu shot locator by zip code, courtesy of the American Lung Association.

    Fall Fest Today

The university-wide Fall Fest is today and all LSUHSC faculty, staff, students and their families are invited. It will be from 3:30 – 7:30 p.m. According to Chancellor Larry Hollier, “There will be something for everyone ?óÔé¼ÔÇ£ delicious food and drink, live music from Bag of Donuts, an airbrush tattoo artist and clowns with balloons for the little ones. For those of you coming from off campus, free parking will be available in Student Lot 2 (on the corner of Perdido and Bolivar streets). We?óÔé¼Ôäóre grateful to Campus Federal for their sponsorship of the event.”
