The deadline for registering for the 2011 Tiger Run is fast approaching; registration ends on March 27th. The race is scheduled for Sunday, April 3rd starting at 8:30 a.m in Audubon Park. The race benefits the Student-Run Homeless Clinics and other student-organized community projects.
This year’s race is also a memorial for Nicole Murphy, a medical student who died in an accident at the World Cup in 2010.
The Isché Library's new faculty articles display has been inaugurated.
The articles on display, rotated out monthly, are in the Isché LibraryÔÇÖs Reference area (near the elevator) on the third floor of the Resource Center Building.

Due to contractor work on the Martin Luther King, Jr. Holiday (Monday, January 17th), the heat will be off in the Resource Center. The Library Commons should be available but chilly. So bundle up to study!
Beginning at 8AM, on Wednesday, January 12, 2011 the Pharos Printing System will be non-operational due to scheduled server maintenance. The outage is expected to end at 1PM. *Edit* Maintenance was complete by 1:30 pm.
During this time, students, faculty and staff will be unable to add money to their Pay Paw cards or print from designated print stations.
Congratulations to LSUHSC’s Department of Psychiatry, who received a Psychiatric Services Achievement Award for their work with the St. Bernard Family Resiliency Project. This is the top Psychiatric Services honor bestowed by the world’s largest psychiatric organization.
The LSU Health Sciences Center New Orleans Department of Psychiatry was recognized for “successfully integrating mental health services into the school system, youth leadership, and community outreach for children and families recovering from the traumatic effects of Hurricane Katrina,” via the St. Bernard Family Resiliency Project.

LSUHSC Facilities is planning to do some drain cleaning in the Library Commons food service area this evening (Thursday, Nov 4th) at about 6:00 pm. As a result, there could be a bad smell in the general area, although they will have deodorizers to dissipate any resulting smells. Thanks for your patience!
LSU Health Sciences Center was recently awarded a $3.12 million grant through the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services in order to train more primary care physicians.
An article on gambit.com states “The five-year grant will be used to double the number of primary care doctors trained through the Rural Family Medicine Residency program at LSU’s Bogalusa Medical Center.”
Louisiana has a vast shortage of primary care physicians and statistics are expected to get worse. Congratulations to LSUHSC for working to help our state in this time of need!
Wired Ports on the downtown campus will be switched over to using the 802.1x protocol at 9 am on Monday, October 25th. This is the same protocol that has been in use on the wireless network for sometime.
The email from the Assistant Vice Chancellor for Information Technology (on October 21st at 10:40 am to all LSUHSC New Orleans faculty, staff, and students) states “If you do experience a problem with a wired connection, please make an appointment with your schoolÔÇÖs IT supporters to have the problem addressed. In the interim, please use your wireless connection.”
Flu shots will be offered to LSUHSC New Orleans faculty, staff and students during the first week of October, brought to you by the School of Nursing. This year the flu shot will be administered in one dose and will help protect you and others against H3N2, influenza B, and the H1N1 viruses.

The Wired Ports in the Library have reverted to allow “guest” laptops to work.

Computer Services pushed through a change to all wired (requiring a cord) ports on the downtown campus yesterday, including the ones in the Library and the Library Commons. The ports will now required that any laptop connecting will need to be included in the network. (How to tell if your laptop is “in the network?” Do you use your LSUHSC userid and password to login? Then yes. If not? Then no.) Users who have “guest” computers will notice a message in the tray of their taskbar saying their Local Area Network has Limited Connectivity. 
Wireless access is still available for non-network laptops.
The LSUHSC/New Orleans Recovery School District Science Partnership 2010 Supply Drive is now collecting donations at several locations around campus, including both the Main Campus and Dental Libraries. Any types of school supplies are accepted, but paper, crayons, notebooks, markers and pencils are especially appreciated.
This annual project is sponsored by the School of Graduate Studies. Supplies can be donated today through Friday, September 10th.

Four LSUHSC School of Public Health MPH students were recipients of the New Orleans Schweitzer Fellowships for 2010. Reece Alkire and Meagan Relle are working with Volunteers of America to develop and implement a disease prevention program focusing on homeless veterans. Megan Burns is creating a school gardening program at James Weldon Johnson Elementary School to instruct children on growing, preparing, and marketing fresh produce. Emily Mabile is collaborating with art therapists, teaching children in Central City how to create murals. This art form promotes mental health by empowering children to represent themselves and their schools.
The New Orleans Schweitzer Fellowship Foundaton established in 2007 as part of the U.S. Schweitzer Fellows Program?« . Approximately 200 exceptional students from the nation’s top health and human service schools are selected to follow in Dr. Albert Schweitzer’s footsteps.

Physiology Department Head, Patricia Molina has been awarded a $4 million grant from the National Institute on Drug Abuse of the National Institutes of Health for the study of how cannabinoids produce subtle changes in gene activity that affect how a person responds to HIV infection. The award was announced via EurekaAlert and LSUHSC twitter feed.
As the Times-Picayune reported the grant “will study how marijuana components called cannabinoids produce changes in gene activity that affects the body’s response to the AIDS virus.” The award will be dispersed over five years.
