As of Feb. 1st, LSUHSC New Orleans is participating in EduRoam, a world-wide consortium of research and educational institutions.
Chancellor Hollier sent out an email on January 25th regarding this new initiative; he stated, “EduRoam is a secure, world-wide roaming access service developed for the international research and education community. EduRoam allows campus community members at any participating institution to use wireless network services at any other participating institution worldwide.” Our participation will make it easier for visiting students/researchers to use wireless access on campus, as well as allowing our researchers and students to have access as they travel. EduRoam is less than 2 years old and began in Europe. It is anticipated that membership will increas rapidly.
To use when you visit a participating educational/research institution:
ÔÇó Set up your computer to use a wireless network by selecting ÔÇ£eduroamÔÇØ from the list of available networks.
ÔÇó Logon as UserID@lsuhsc.edu, and give your current LSUHSC password.
EduRoam is a new iniative in the United States, but hopefully it will grow quickly. Check out their US map to see participating institutions.

Spring Semester is upon us! New students take note:
1. The Registrar’s office is on the fourth floor of the library. Students get their IDs here. After getting your ID, stop by the Circulation desk for a library barcode.
2. You need a library barcode for off campus access.
3. Your ID can also store money for printing, books and food purchases. Get it formatted in the LSUHSC Bookstore on the 2nd floor of the Resource Center Building to access this feature. More info from PayPaw.
4. Computers are available in the Library Commons and the open access lab on the library’s 4th floor. Simply log in with your lsuhsc user id and password.
5. Wireless access and laptop ports are available throughout campus. Wireless instructions.

Dr. Robert Brannon, professor in the Department of Oral and Maxillofacial Pathology, has received a tremendous accolade from the U.S. Air Force Office of the Surgeon General. Dr. Brannon, a retired U.S. Air Force colonel, and an internationally recognized expert in oral and maxillofacial pathology and forensic dentistry, has been appointed Civilian National Consultant in Oral and Maxillofacial Pathology to the Air Force Surgeon General. This three-year appointment is equivalent to the rank of a one-star (brigadier) general. Dr. Brannon is only the third person to hold this position.
ÔÇ£This rare honor is a fitting tribute to someone recognized by his peers as a giant in the fields of oral and maxillofacial pathology and forensic dentistry,ÔÇØ said Dean Henry Gremillion.

Dr. Charles Hilton, LSU School of Medicine associate dean for academic affairs says he’d do it all again, medical residency that is! In a New Orleans CityBusiness (Dec 14, 2009) interview with Christian Moises, Dr. Hilton reveals his outlook of medical education in Louisiana.
According to an email sent out to all LSUHSC New Orleans Faculty, Staff, and Students the campus Emergency Notification System will be tested on Thursday, November 5th at 11:30 a.m. This test will include the campus-wide Digital Signage as well as the text alerting system.

I attended last year and discovered my flexibility range, BMI, and other health information, and got advice on posture exercises and how to lift a heavy box properly.

LSUHSC has also created a H1N1 info portal, with updated swine flu information. Our campus is also applying to become a point of distribution for the H1N1 vaccine when it becomes available. The H1N1 flu vaccine will be distributed in accordance with the CDC?óÔé¼Ôäós priority group vaccination recommendations.
Four years later, a memorandum of understanding is signed for a new public-private teaching hospital.
Julie Schiavo, reference librarian at the LSU Dental School, has just been awarded an Express Outreach Grant for over $3,000 from the National Network of Libraries of Medicine, South Central Region. Julie’s grant, entitled “Outreach to the LSUHSC-NO School of Dentistry Clinic: Providing Quality Consumer Health Information to Dental Patients,” will provide consumer health computer stations to patients at the Dental clinic.

If your LSUHSC password is ready to expire, it might be a safer bet to change it at a wired computer, rather than attempting to change it while connected (or attempting to connect) to the wireless. Because of individal computer caching issues, the new password does not always work perfectly. Passwords may be changed at any of the Library’s public PCs by accessing your LSUHSC webmail.
With so many students returning to campus for the Fall semester, we’re seeing a number of issues accessing the wireless network. If the directions that the Library or Nursing School have posted aren’t working out. Try not checking off any of the certificate authorities. When the popup box comes up to accept the security certificate, wait a few moments before clicking OK. It seems like if you click through the boxes too quickly, you end up stuck in a login loop.
If this doesn’t work, we can try to help in the Library or you can hunt down a computer supporter in your school.
Once a year, New Orleans Magazine publishes a list of the Top Doctors in the greater New Orleans area; this list is compiled from a database created by Best Doctors in America. This year there were 564 listings from 66 specialties; the list is created by asking area physicians who they would want to treat an ill family member. Two LSUHSC physicians were featured Kim Edward LeBlanc and Cleveland Moore. Congratulations to everyone on the list!
