ScienceDirect Freedom Collection now available!

We are happy to announce the Libraries now have access to the ScienceDirect Freedom Collection. This means that you should now be able to access the majority of journals available on ScienceDirect from 1995 to present. Notable exceptions are the Clinics of North America and Cell Press journals; most of these excluded journals are available through other Library subscriptions.

Links to these journals are already available through the E-Journals & E-Books A to Z List and the Discovery/EDS Health search box. We are working on adding them to INNOPAC, the Library catalog and the WebBridge LR link resolver.

The biggest change you will see is an increase in the number of journals on ScienceDirect that you can now access through the Libraries’ subscription. Subjects include all of the health sciences, as well as more journals covering materials science and chemistry. Journals that are within our normal scope of subjects will be available through INNOPAC, the Library’s catalog. Journals that are not necessarily within our usual subjects, but that could otherwise be useful to your research, can be found through the E-Journals & E-Books A to Z List, the Discovery/EDS Health search box, and in various databases such as PubMed and Scopus through the WebBridge LR link resolver.

We hope you will find the access to these hundreds of new journals of help. If you have any questions about these titles or any other Library services, please contact us.

Libraries are Open!

But still on a Winter Break schedule, the Isché Library is open from 7:30am to 8pm on Wednesday, January 2nd and Thursday, January 3rd and then from 7:30am to 6pm on Friday, January 4th.

The Dental Library is open from 8am to 5pm on Wednesday, January 2nd through Friday, January 4th.

Both Libraries resume their regular hours over the weekend.

LearningExpress upgrade to PrepSTEP December 26th and 27th!

Our LearningExpress subscription will be upgraded to PrepSTEP on December 26th and 27th.  According to the publisher, the transition should be seamless.

PayPerPrint Scheduled Downtime

The PayPerPrint system on campus will be down for 1 hour on Thursday, December 20th beginning at 1pm for scheduled maintenance. This affects all PayPerPrint systems across campus.

Publications cited in the Faculty Publications database are harvested weekly from a variety of sources, such as PubMed, SCOPUS, and CINAHL, to name a few. The annual meeting of the South Central Chapter of the Medical Library Association is one of our biggest events of the year. We hold our advisory board meetings, exhibit, and sometimes offer continuing education. One of the highlights for us is being able to bring our Library Outreach Student Award winners with us to show them the ropes. In this three-week series, we’ve asked some of them to reflect on their experiences.

Thanks to the NNLM SCR Library Outreach Student Award, I was able to attend SCC/MLA’s 45th annual conference in San Antonio, TX.

Although I work as an associate in a health sciences library, I had no idea what to expect from a medical library conference. Luckily, the NNLM Regional Medical Library staff explained everything about what to expect at the conference beforehand so that I wasn’t completely lost, and they answered all of my questions.

Attending committee meetings was unexpectedly my favorite part of SCC. Two of the committee meetings I attended were the Continuing Education and Research committees, where I was able to get a glimpse into how each committee plans for the following year and all of the work that goes into preparing for the conference each year.

However, the Outreach Committee meeting was the highlight of my time at the conference. I was interested to hear all of the different outreach activities among medical libraries in our region and how NNLM supports them in their endeavors. I had no idea of how varied outreach efforts were in the medical library community, from providing health information training to public librarians, to attending health fairs locally, and conducting webinars.

It was very interesting to see the research trends that are developing within medical libraries and how medical librarians can help to move forward medical research and evidence-based medicine. Not to mention, the social events were an extremely fun way to network with other health information professionals!

I had a great time at SCC and would encourage other Library and Information Science students to attend. I left the conference feeling motivated about my career path and connected to the larger community of health sciences librarians.

Outbreak of E. coli Infections Linked to Romaine Lettuce

CDC is advising that U.S. consumers not eat any romaine lettuce, and retailers and restaurants not serve or sell any, until we learn more about the outbreak. This investigation is ongoing and the advice will be updated as more information is available.

Thanksgiving Hours

The Libraries will be closed Thursday-Saturday, November 22-24th of Thanksgiving week.

Both Libraries will close early on Wednesday, November 21st; the Isché Library will close at 6pm and the Dental Library will close at 5pm.

Both Libraries will reopen on Sunday, November 25th; the Isché Library will be open from 10am to 12 midnight and the Dental Library will be open from 11:30am to 8pm.

Isabel to be Discontinued

Unfortunately, due to lack of use and frequent technical difficulties, the Library will be discontinuing Isabel as of November 30, 2018. Working in conjunction with DynaMed, Isabel is a differential diagnosis tool. If you were one of the few who found it helpful, please contact one of our reference librarians to advise you on an alternative.

Dental School Closure 11/14

Due to a Power Outage, the Dental School will be closed for the rest of the day. All classes and appointments are cancelled.

Normal hours and operations will resume tomorrow.
