New Books!

The Isché Library is featuring 16 new books on display near the 3rd floor elevator. Subjects include anatomy, occupational health, respiratory care, nuclear medicine, nursing, and more.  A special shout-out goes to “Medicine’s Michelangelo: the life & art of Frank H. Netter, MD,” which was donated to the Library by our very own Reference Librarian, Mary Marix.  These books are available for check-out.

BoardVitals board reviews now on STAT!Ref!

The LSUHSC-New Orleans Libraries are pleased to announce that we now have access to a new exam review database, BoardVitals.  Our access to BoardVitals is available through our subscription to STAT!Ref.

Our subscription includes 8 test banks:

• NBDE Part I
• NBDE Part II
• NCLEX-PN
• NCLEX-RN
• USMLE Step 1
• USMLE Step 1, Part 2
• USMLE Step 2
• USMLE Step 3

Setting up an account is easy with your lsuhsc.edu email address!

There are a few ways to get to the BoardVitals registration page:

• If you are on campus, you can go directly to the BoardVitals sign up page: https://www.boardvitals.com/users/sign_up, or you can log in to the STAT!Ref database from the Library’s web page, and then click on the BoardVitals link.
• If you are off-campus, you can access the STAT!Ref database from the Library’s web page remotely using your library barcode and PIN. Don’t forget to use an “Off Campus Access” link.  Once you are logged into our STAT!Ref subscription, click on the BoardVitals link.

Fill out the sign-up application on the BoardVitals platform making sure to use your lsuhsc.edu email account.  Shortly after you submit your application, BoardVitals will send you an email with a link to accept and confirm your account.  Once that process is complete, you can sign in using your email address and new password to access our subscribed tests.  You can then access BoardVitals through our STAT!Ref database or by going directly to the BoardVitals web site: http://www.boardvitals.com/.

Please note that once on the BoardVitals platform, there will be options to trial or purchase other test banks on your account (and personal dollar).  These options are not funded through our subscription.

RefWorks downtime starting Saturday night, Aug.8th

RefWorks will be down for maintenance starting at 9pm, Saturday, August 8th, and lasting 8 hours until 5:00 am on Sunday, August 9th.

EBSCO eBooks collection direct link

EBSCO is one of the Library’s many eBook providers, and over the past two years, we have been able to substantially increase our eBook offerings through the EBSCOhost platform.  We currently have over 100 titles in a variety of disciplines that support each of our 6 schools.

All of the EBSCO eBooks are accessible through our library catalog and E-Journals & E-Books A to Z List, but now we have added another access point through our list of databases under ebooks (EBSCOhost).  This option will allow the user to browse and search all of the EBSCO eBooks in one place.  To see a complete listing of our EBSCO eBooks, be sure to click on the “eBooks” link on the top banner of the database and then select “View All” on the “Highlights” bar.

Don’t forget to check out all of our eBook collections.  We have created a handy-dandy ebooks LibGuides to help you navigate all the different options.

New edition online: “Cancer: Principles and Practice of Oncology”

The Library is pleased to announce that we have purchased the latest edition of Devita, Hellman, and Rosenberg’s Cancer: Principles and Practice of Oncology (10th ed., 2015) online through our Books@Ovid platform.  Vincent Devita and his colleagues have been publishing this classic text since 1982!  The 10th edition of this definitive oncology resource includes several new chapters, and this online book will be updated quarterly with new content.

This title can be found via our library catalog: http://innopac.lsuhsc.edu/, and it can be accessed directly from the Books@Ovid platform.  For off campus access, be sure to log in through our Web Access Management system (WAM) using your library barcode number and PIN.

Library adds the CSE SCIENTIFIC STYLE AND FORMAT online!

The Library is pleased to announce that we now have an online subscription to the most recent edition of the Scientific style and format: the CSE manual for authors, editors, and publishers.  Currently in its 8th edition, the CSE style manual has been a standard reference for scientific publishing since 1960.  As it is the required format for Graduate Studies theses and dissertations, we are most excited to be able to offer our users this access both on and off campus.  For off campus access, be sure to log in through our Web Access Management system (WAM) using your library barcode number and PIN.

Doody’s Precision Search is not working. We will let you know when access has been restored.

MD Consult to be discontinued. Access ends May 11, 2014.

Adios! Au revoir! Ciao!  MD Consult will be going away.  Our access is set to expire May 11, 2014.  While Elsevier has developed a new product, Clinical Key, that replaces and expands MD Consult, the cost is currently far beyond our budget.  Please know that we are making every effort to purchase essential MD Consult books and journals from other sources as they are available and affordable.

We recently purchased 10 of the most heavily used books on another online platform, R2 Digital Library.  Many of the books can be found in the Library’s print collection.  A library guide has been created to help users find alternative content.  We have also subscribed to select journals via Science Direct.  We will continue to make replacing this content a priority, however funding is limited.

The School of Medicine first acquired MD Consult in 1999.  It was one of the earliest online resources for medical books and journals.  Funding for this resource has always been a joint effort with costs being shared among some of the schools and, at one time, the regional Area Health Education Centers.  For the last 10 years, funding has been provided by the Schools of Medicine, Nursing, Allied Health, and the Library.

New Faculty Publications! Congratulations to all our fantastic LSUHSC-NO authors!

The Library’s Faculty Publications display has been updated with eight new articles for the months of March and April.  The display highlights sixteen articles at a time, rotating eight new articles in each month.  The display is located near the Library’s internal elevator, which is on the first floor of the library.

These articles are part of the Library’s Faculty Publications Database, which is maintained by Reference Librarian, Kathy Kerdolff.  The database includes publications authored by LSUHSC-New Orleans faculty, researchers, and students since 1998.  It is updated weekly with new articles harvested from a variety of indexes, such as PubMed, Scopus, and CINAHL.

McGraw-Hill recently?áunvelied their new online platform which is designed to integrate all of their Access products. The look is very different but the content is all there, so don’t panic when you see it. If you have trouble getting to anything, just let us know. We will post more information about the new platform soon.

Mosby’s Nursing Consult downtime, Sunday, August 18th

MosbyÔÇÖs Nursing Consult is launching two new content areas.?á As a result, the web site will undergo maintenance on Sunday, August 18th from 12:00 am to 6:00 am.?á During this time, the site will be unavailable.?á When MosbyÔÇÖs Nursing Consult relaunches at 6:00 am, you will have access to two new areas in the Calculators & Tools section: Labs & Diagnostics and Scales.

If you encounter problems after the maintenance has been completed, please contact a library staff member and someone will get back to you during regular library hours.
