The Times-Picayune has reported that 3rd year medical student Nicole Murphy has been killed in a hit and run accident while at the World Cup in South Africa. The entire LSUHSC community offers our condolences to her family, as well as a speedy recovery to the other family members who were injured in the accident.
WWL-TV featured a story on a couple of local surgeons, including LSUHSC’s own Kamran Khoobehi offering some ideas on how to stop the oil leak, using surgical techniques. Love the out of the box thinking!
Chancellor Hollier issued our annual Emergency Preparedness Plan email reminder this morning to coincide with the start of the 2010 Hurricane Season. Please be sure to familiarize yourself with the university’s Weather Related Emergency Procedures (Chancellor’s Memo 51).
Let’s all keep our fingers crossed that it won’t need to be implemented this year.
Liwei Chen, an LSUHSC School of Public Health faculty member is making news (WebMD, NPR, UPI, Reuters, and HealthDay News) because of her study on the connection between sugary drinks and blood pressure. The study (pdf) is in the “publish ahead of print” section of Circulation. The study was released as a EurekAlert by LSUHSC Information Services.

School of Public Health Environmental and Occupational Health Sciences Department Head, Jim Diaz appeared on WWL-TV on Friday night (April 30th) and stated that the general public does not need to be concerned that “with both the chemical sampling and taste testing that the experts do now, he does not think contaminated seafood will make it to your table.”
On Saturday, April 24th, Louisiana State University will celebrate its 150th birthday. The Baton Rouge Advocate has produced a special section in anticipation of the anniversary on Sunday, April 18th.
The LSU School of Medicine was part of the main campus in Baton Rouge (even though it was in New Orleans) from its inception in 1931 until the Medical Center became its own campus in 1965.
Before you go out and purchase that 3-D TV to enhance your theatrical home experience, you might want to know that they pose a potential health hazard.?á Although itÔÇÖs a bit too early to determine a full list of hazards, some makers are releasing warnings about watching 3-D television which may cause:
- Nausea
- Dizziness
- Seizures
Other reports include:
- Eye twitching
- Convulsions to disorientation
Dr. Nicolas Bazan, head of the LSUHSCÔÇÖs Neuroscience Center, is concerned about the effects it will have on children. Since the connection between the brain and the eye are still in developing stage, the extent is not known about how harmful it can be. Like most other things, moderation is recommended.

Elevators #3 & #4 will be out of service from Thursday, April 15th through mid-June, according to Facility Services. The elevators are to be modified for future flood issues. Plan on leaving the Isché Library a few minutes earlier to get to your next class or meeting.
The Library Commons (24 hour study space) will be closed on Monday, March 22nd & Tuesday, March 23rd from midnight until 6 am. Outside contractors will be conducting core drilling on all floors of the Resource Center Building during this time.

Today is the National Residency Matching Program Match Day. The Library wishes the best of luck to all of our Senior medical students.
According to the NRMP, the 2010 Main Residency Match was the largest in NRMP history, encompassing more than 37,000 applicants, 4,100 graduate medical education programs, and 25,500 residency training positions.

Moodle will be down on campus from 11 p.m. this evening (Friday, Feb. 26th) until approximately mid-morning tomorrow (Saturday, Feb. 27th) for server maintenance. Please plan your use accordingly.
Facilities Services has scheduled a water outage in the Resource Center Building from 4:30-8:30 this evening(Monday, Feb. 8th). All restrooms and sinks will be unavailable during this time. The nearest available restrooms will be in the Nursing/Allied Health Building.

LSUHSC Assistant Professor Adrianne Brennan (Psychiatry) was interviewed in a Times-Picayue article that came out today; she stated “Because we were so bonded as a city through Katrina, we also bonded through the Saints. Our sense of community is so strong.”
