The American Heart Association just wrapped their Scientific Sessions 2008 at the Morial Convention Center, which drew over 30,000 health professionals to the area this week. Meeting abstracts are available online for free in Circulation.
Back in the 1930’s, 3,500 people was big news. A Times-Picayune newspaper clipping from November 11, 1937 announces: “3500 will attend Southern Medics Convention here,” reporting on the 31st meeting of the Southern Medical Association, which met in New Orleans in 1909, 1923 and 1931 as well. In 1949, surgeons from around the world flew into Moisant Airport to attend the 13th Congress of the International Society of Surgery, where for the first time television was used to broadcast over 20 operations to surgeons watching in the nearby Roosevelt Hotel. (Britain’s representative was cautious of the use of video in training, however.) LSU’s own Dr. James D. Rives performed intricate lung surgery in Charity hospital, using WDSU’s facilities. Google announced on Tuesday that it was launching Google Flu Trends which will combine flu-related searches that it receives along with information from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) to estimate flu cases in all 50 states. The CDC offers information on Flu Season for consumers as well as Seasonal Flu information for health professionals, parents, and teachers.
According to Google Flu Trends, incidence of the flu in Louisiana is still low. And they even offer a flu shot locator by zip code, courtesy of the American Lung Association.
Auscultation is the technical term for listening to the internal sounds of the body, usually using a stethoscope. The links below offer a number of websites that contain heart, lung, and breathing sounds.

November is American Diabetes Month according to the Centers for Disease Control. MedlinePlus offers a great deal of patient information on Diabetes that supplements the CDC page.
The university-wide Fall Fest is today and all LSUHSC faculty, staff, students and their families are invited. It will be from 3:30 – 7:30 p.m. According to Chancellor Larry Hollier, “There will be something for everyone ?óÔé¼ÔÇ£ delicious food and drink, live music from Bag of Donuts, an airbrush tattoo artist and clowns with balloons for the little ones. Did you know? The CDC postponed publishing updates to the adult immunization schedule until January 2009, but the folks at Group on Immunization Education (GIE) of the Society of Teachers of Family Medicine has updated their PDA-friendly immunization schedules. You can also find other resources such as clinical scenarios for teaching, online educational videos, and curricular materials.

The CDC has created The Ounce of Prevention campaign to give health educators and consumers practical and useful tips. The website offers a variety of resources, including information on food preparation, wild animals, and antibiotics.

In case you haven’t heard, today is election day. Remember that to find your precinct or a sample ballot, the Louisiana Secretary of State offers GeauxVote website with that information.

Due to various reasons, the list is not a comprehensive listing of the electronic journals we have, but it?óÔé¼Ôäós relatively close.
Always check INNOPAC if you want to be 100% sure we don?óÔé¼Ôäót own a title. (There?óÔé¼Ôäós even a button for this on the list.)
The list includes all those strange non-health related titles we get through LOUIS, which is an advantage if someone comes looking for Harvard Business Journal or Consumer Reports
The list requires login to WAM for off campus access.
Some MD Consult titles may prompt for your lsuhsc username & password (Lancet, etc)
You don?óÔé¼Ôäót have to put in a full journal title to search, however, searching MEDLINE abbreviations may give you trouble
