Early Closure 12/14/2022

Both Libraries are closing at 2:30pm today because of the threat of tornadoes. All other departments on campus are closing as well. Both Libraries plan to open tomorrow at their regular times.

December Faculty Publications

A new selection of articles have been added to the Faculty Publications display in the Ische Library. These eight articles, as well as all of the articles in our Faculty Publications database, are authored by at least one member of our research community here at LSUHSC-New Orleans. Each month the Library is proud to present copies of eight of these publications in a rotating display of 16. With the currently changes, we’ve decided to post the publications digitally. Check out the display below:

Publications cited in the Faculty Publications database are harvested weekly from a variety of sources, such as PubMed, SCOPUS, and CINAHL, to name a few. In addition to articles they include books, book chapters, papers, editorials, letters to the editor, and meeting abstracts, all authored by at least one member of the LSUHSC-NO community. The database is currently maintained by Metadata & Digital Projects Librarian Andrew Olinik.

Ische Library Welcomes Our New Librarian, Chandler Smith

We are happy to introduce our newest Librarian, Chandler Smith! Chandler joined us earlier this month as our Education Librarian. Chandler is a Louisiana native who received a BA in History from LSU and a Masters in Library Science from The University of Sheffield in the UK.

Ische Library welcomes our new Circulation Associate, Liza Whitfield

Liza is a New Orleans native who graduated from Loyola University New Orleans in 2020 with a BA in History. As an undergraduate, she worked in Loyola’s Special Collections and Archives where she benefited from the guidance of the university’s lead archivist for two years. In August 2020, she completed a post-graduate fellowship at the Library of Congress within their Learning and Innovation Office. She is glad to be able to re-enter the field at LSUHSC and looks forward to furthering her education in the near future.

Thanksgiving Hours

The Libraries will both close at 6pm on Wednesday, November 23rd and will remain closed Thursday, November 24th through Saturday, November 26th. The Isché Library will be open on Sunday, November 27th, from 9:30am to 10pm. The Dental Library will reopen on Monday, November 28th at 8am.

New Data Management LibGuide

A new LibGuide has been created to help researchers navigate the upcoming NIH Data Management Sharing Plan requirement which takes effect in January 2023. Check it out at this link: https://libguides.lsuhsc.edu/data

The Library Welcomes Our New Librarian, Rowan Marye

The LSU Health Isché Library would like to welcome our new librarian, Rowan Marye! Rowan joined us this month as our new Circulation Librarian and School of Nursing Liaison.

Rowan received their Master of Library and Information Science degree from University of Illinois, Urbana-Champaign, IL and their Bachelor of Fine Arts in Printmaking from Louisiana State University. They have worked in public libraries in Illinois for over a decade. Most recently, they worked in a library consortium in central Illinois. They are excited to be back in New Orleans.

Emergency Power System Tests – Saturday, November 5th

From 7am to 12pm on Saturday, November 5th, there will be tests of the emergency power system that will result in 5-10 second power outages in the Library building.

These are planned outages to the campus power as they test the new East Campus Standby Power Plant.

Please be aware that they will be happening, as they may result in minor disruptions, but do not be alarmed.

ORCID LibGuide

A new LibGuide has been created to help faculty, staff, and students with information about Open Researcher and Contributor IDs (ORCID). An ORCID id is a free, unique, persistent identifier that help disambiguate and identify individual researchers and their scholarly output like publications, datasets, software, and more. Check it out at this link: https://libguides.lsuhsc.edu/orcid

Issues with Safari and the Library search box

If you use the Discovery search box from the Library’s home page with the Safari browser, you will have issues regardless of whether you are on campus or off.

Until this problem is resolved, you can access the Discovery service by either going through the link on the Databases page (https://www.lsuhsc.edu/library/databases/discovery.aspx) or going directly to https://discovery.ebsco.com/c/rtt753. If you use the second link, you may be immediately asked to log in using your full LSUHSC-NO email address and password.

We will update when we have more information about this problem, but if you need help with this or any other Library resources, please contact us.

New Looks for Discovery/EDS Health and AtoZ!

Starting today, the Discovery/EDS Health search and the E-Journals & E-Books A to Z List have new looks and improved features.

For Discovery/EDS Health, the first thing you’ll notice is the more streamlined appearance:

Even with this new look, the basic functions of Discovery/EDS Health remain the same. You’ll still have the ability to search numerous databases at once and link to tens of thousands of ebooks and articles whenever you need information about a topic.

Linking to resources is a bit different in the new EDS. Look for the Access now menu to see where the article or ebook is available:

The E-Journals & E-Books A to Z List has also received a makeover:

You’ll still be able to browse and get links to the majority of ebooks and journals the Library subscribes to, along with the many resources available in databases, as well as a variety of free and open access titles.

This new iteration of the A to Z List also brings back a feature that has been missing for a few years. You’ll once again be able to see what titles you have access to by the publisher or package of those resources by clicking the Browse Databases option:

As with most Library resources, you will be asked to log in when accessing from off campus, or when connected via LSUHSC-Secure, Citrix, the VPN, or if you are in the 1542 or CALS buildings. See our Off Campus LibGuide if you need help with logging in.

UPDATE: Troubles accessing articles via LibKey fixed

October 12, 2022 Update: This problem has been resolved, so you should be prompted to log in when needed while getting journal articles when connected to LSUHSC-Secure, the VPN, Citrix, or when in the 1542 building. If you run into any issues, please contact us with the citation of the article you’re having difficulty getting to as well as what network you’re using on your computer.

We are aware there is a problem that is affecting accessing articles via the LibKey products when connected via LSUHSC-Secure, the VPN, Citrix, or when in the 1542 building.

The authentication that is needed to get to articles is not being carried over to the links LibKey provides at this time. We are working with LibKey support to resolve the problem.

Until it is fixed, if you run into a problem when accessing an article via the Library’s link resolver or directly using any of the LibKey products, you can go to the journal’s web site using the Library Catalog or the E-Journals & E-Books A to Z List. You will be prompted to log in as needed to access articles.
