If Ovid is your database of choice, there is a change that affects using it off-campus. You will still need to use your LSUHSC user i.d. and password whenever you attempt to use Ovid. The change, however, comes after your initial log in: you will then be asked to supply the information for your library account, which includes your name, barcode and PIN.

We’ve received reports of there being some difficulty in accessing EBSCOhost databases from off-campus. In some cases you might see the following screen even after you’ve provided your name, barcode, and PIN when you’re attempting to use a database:
If you do see this screen there is something that can help until the problem is fixed by the folks at EBSCO.
It is best to clear your browser’s cache, including the browsing history and cookies stored for your session. In Firefox you can do this by going to the Tools menu and selecting “Clear Recent History.” On Internet Explorer go to Tools->Internet Options and under the “General” tab there is a button to delete the Browsing History. Unfortunately you will have to start all over again with authenticating and searching the database after you’ve cleared all of this information.
This issue affects all of the EBSCOhost databases including CINAHL, Academic Search Complete, and PsycArticles.

Update: as of 11:45am the problem looks to have been solved. However, if you encounter any other troubles, please let us know.
All EBSCOhost databases, including CINAHL, Academic Search Complete, and APA PsycArticles, are currently not working correctly. The pages are displaying without graphics and you cannot access the full-text of articles when browsing titles in the databases. This problem is occurring both on and off-campus, and is affecting all users of EBSCOhost.
ScienceDirect and Scopus are expected to be offline and unavailable for approximately 19 hours beginning Saturday, August 25th, 2012 for scheduled maintenance for a new release.

For those who use Ovid as their preferred choice for searching, there is good news: the WebBridge Link Resolver has been added allowing you to check for the availability of an article through the click of one icon. You will see the “Check Full Text” icon first with the search results summary:
You will also see the same icon when viewing the abstract of any citation. When you click the link resolver icon a new window will open showing any sources where that article is available. If no matches are found, you will have the opportunity to request the article through the ILLiad Interlibrary Loan service.

Hey there R2 Digital Library, did you do something different to your hair? Lose a couple pounds? You look…different. Really, if I wanted to be gauche about it, I’d say you’ve had some work done.
It’s true. R2 Digital Library, one of our e-book providers, has received a back to school makeover. Things look a little different, hopefully for the better. Updates include:
- An updated user interface that’s easier to use and navigate
- Integrated subject areas: View all titles by discipline or all titles alphabetically
- “A-Z Index” provides integrated topic and drug indices
- Integrated quick search with expanded faceted search tools
- Expanded filters offer quick access to specific content by practice area (Nursing, Allied Health, etc.)
- Image-specific search results displayed in main search results

Natural Standard, the evidence-based database about complementary and alternative therapies, is pleased to announce that 100 Foods, Herbs & Supplements monographs are now available in French. All Foods, Herbs & Supplement topics will be available in this additional language in the coming months.
As with the Natural Standard Spanish language monographs, the French monographs are written at the Bottom Line reading level, providing an abbreviated review designed for use by patients or professionals. Each monograph is adapted from a Natural Standard comprehensive systematic review, and includes evidence-based information on effectiveness, side effects, interactions, dosing, pregnancy and breastfeeding.
The French language monographs may be accessed by selecting “French” from the language drop-down menu within a Bottom Line Monograph. Users may also search for available French topics using the Advanced Search feature. Currently available monographs include popular topics such as chamomile, gingko, ginger, green tea and melatonin.
For those Library patrons still using Ovid and are accessing it from off-campus, an extra step seems to have appeared this morning.?á After login (with your LSUHSC userid and password), the Library’s Off Campus/WAM screen appears and asks for authentication. Users will need to be registered with the Libraries and know their Library barcode and PIN. Contact either the Dental or Isché Library Circulation Desks for assistance (504-941-8158 for Dental and 504-568-6100 for Isché) for assistance. Or authorized users can access Ovid via the VPN or Citrix.
We are working with Ovid to correct the issue.
Looking for a quick way to get to the article you need? The Libary’s WebBridge Link Resolver can help! Launched in May, the service lets you check the availability of an article directly from the citation.
Look for this icon 
in the following databases: EBSCOhost (Academic Search Complete, CINAHL, etc.), Scopus, ProQuest Nursing and Allied Health Source, RefWorks, Web of Knowledge/Web of Science, and PubMed. When you click the icon a new tab or window will open showing options where you can retrieve the article.

Access to MDConsult now matches most of the Libraries’ other online resources. Instead of logging in, users on campus are validated by IP address. Off campus users will use the Libraries’ standard remote access method, WAM.

51 journals were given "time-outs" from the Impact Factors
Last week, Thompson Reuters published the 2011 edition of Journal Citation Reports, otherwise known as the Journal Impact Factors.?á Several things are new about this newest edition of JCR such as?á increased coverage of regional journals and the addition of 526 new journals to the Impact Factor rolls.?á However, one new factor, while positive for JCR, was not very positive for journal publishers.?á JCR removed 51 journals for “anomalous citation patterns,” aka: systemic self-citation.
How do these “anomalous citations patterns” occur??á There are several ways:
1.?á Editors may require authors to cite articles in the publishing journal.
2.?á An editor may publish a short review article citing every article in the journal published within a certain time period.
3.?á An editor may publish a bibliometric study of the papers published in the?á journal and then cite each paper.
4.?á Several journals may cooperate to form a “citation cartel” whereby the journals cite each other in order to raise their impact factors.?á These cartels can be much more difficult to detect because the citations are not just self-cites, they contain cites in several journals.
Although these journals were removed from the JCR for 2011, they will have a chance to return to the impact factor rolls when their citation patterns return to a similar pattern to other journals within their field.
According to Thompson Reuters:
“Suppressed titles were found to have anomalous citation patterns resulting in a significant distortion of the Journal Impact Factor, so that the rank does not accurately reflect the journalÔÇÖs citation performance in the literature. The Journal Impact Factor provides an important and objective measure of a journalÔÇÖs contribution to scholarly communication, and its distortion by an excessive concentration of citations is a serious matter. JCR staff will monitor these journals going forward and the titles will be included in a future edition of JCR when the problem of citation concentration has been resolved.”
Whatever you may feel about the validity and usefulness of a journal’s Impact Factor, this year’s JCR demonstrates that Thompson Reuters attempts to uphold high standards in scholarly publishing.

Access to articles from Slack titles through the WebBridge Link Resolver is not working correctly. The publisher changed the web address for all of their journals, and as a result if you attempt to follow the link for “Slack Incorporated” from the link resolver, you will see a 404 Page not Found error and will be unable to proceed. A note next to these links indicating the problem has been added.

Access to these titles through INNOPAC, the Library’s catalog, or the Electronic Journals List is unaffected by this issue. We apologize for the inconvenience, but we are in contact with the publisher and hope the problem will be resolved soon.
