BikeEasy bike map & incident reports

Local bipedal group Bike Easy is collecting bicycle crash statistics and putting them on the map. (Click image to go to the map).

Bike Easy Bike Map

Bike Easy Bike Map - orange indicates an 'incident'

Behold the “Incidents, Hazards, and Points of Interest” bike map, which is actively collecting incident reports via this form. Posts are moderated and will show up on the map in 24-48 hours. All incidents are displayed anonymously.

If you have been involved in a bicycle incident in the New Orleans area, put it on the map and bring awareness of the number of bicycle crashes that occur in New Orleans each year. And be careful out there.

ATTN: Mobile Dynamed Users

You can now register the same Dynamed serial number on up to 5 devices of the same operating system.
From Skyscape:

For example, if you have registered DynaMed on your iPhone, you can install it to your iPad using the same serial number. When you install Skyscape/DynaMed on the iPad, all of the resources that were registered to your iPhone are automatically installed. This behavior will also apply to the Android and BlackBerry platforms.

Serial numbers have a shelf life of one year, regardless of how many devices on which it is registered. Contact the library for a new serial number if Dynamed has stopped working for you.

Dynamed provides clinically-organized summaries with references for nearly 3,200 diseases and condition topics and over 800 drugs. It is available free to faculty, staff and students of LSUHSC.

Wi-Fi for iOS 5

If you’ve already taken the plunge and installed iOS 5 on your iPhone, iPad, or iPod Touch, you can now jump right onto the LSUHSC wi-fi connection more easily than ever.

ÔÇó Locate LSUHSC-Secure from the available wi-fi networks listed in the Settings
ÔÇó Enter your LSUHSC user i.d. and password; this is the same one you use to access your e-mail
 Accept the eis-dpsnps1.master certificate
ÔÇó You should now be connected!

If you do not have iOS 5, please refer to the instructions for iOS 4 or earlier to use the LSUHSC wi-fi.

Wondering whether you can upgrade to iOS 5? Check this link for the list of compatible devices.

Wi-Fi for Android

Wanting to use your Android phone or tablet to hop onto the LSUHSC wi-fi? These steps will guide you through the process:
ÔÇó OS has to be 2.2.2 (Froyo) or later
ÔÇó Go to Wireless & networks/Wi-Fi settings to manage any available networks and choose ÔÇ£LSUHSC-SecureÔÇØ from the list.
ÔÇó The authentication for the network is 802.1x, the EAP method is PEAP, and the Phase 2 authentication is MSCHAPV2.
ÔÇó From there youÔÇÖll be able to enter your LSUHSC user i.d. and password (sometimes the i.d. needs to be prefixed with lsumc-master\userid). After this information is entered, youÔÇÖll be authenticated to the network and it should show you are connected to the LSUHSC wifi.

Book-drops

Did you know that the downtown library has a book-drop conveniently located near the newspaper, ATM & snack machines on the skywalk? It often takes more than a few books to complete a research paper, so to help alleviate the back breaking burden of toting those books back to the library, use the book-drop.

The Dental campus bookdrop is located on the 3rd floor breezeway.

Interlibrary Loan Service

If the Libraries do not have a specific article or book that youÔÇÖre interested in, try getting it through our Inter-library loan service. The ILLiad (Interlibrary Loan) link is conveniently located on the right-hand side of the libraryÔÇÖs homepage. For first time users, simply fill out the First Time Users info and then fill in the specifics of the article or book of interest. Very often, items are free but depending on certain restrictions a charge might be associated with the item you requested. Email the ILL department for more info.

Lost & Found

Has there ever been a time when you lost a precious item and didn’t bother to look for it? The library has a lost and found for items found in the library and the library Commons. We hold items such as jump-drives, text-books, clothing, jewelry and other miscellaneous items for up to 3 months. The next time you misplace something and have recently visited the library, stop by the circulation desk and make an inquiry or call (504)568-6100. For items lost in another part of campus, contact campus police at (504)568-2156.

Campus tips for students

The 2011 Fall semester is officially in session! Here’s a news round-up for navigating campus.

1. The RegistrarÔÇÖs office is on the fourth floor of the library. Students get their IDs here. After getting your ID, stop by the Circulation desk for a library barcode.

2. You need a library barcode for off campus access.

3. Your ID can also store money for printing, books and food purchases. Get it formatted in the LSUHSC Bookstore on the 2nd floor of the Resource Center Building to access this feature. More info about PayPaw.

5. Speaking of printing, here’s a whole article about it.

4. Need to know where Health Services is located? Or who to contact for computer support? Our amazing circulation staff has compiled a list of the most Frequently Asked Questions they receive.

6. Need to google something? Full-access computers are available in the Library Commons and the open access lab (library 4th floor). Simply log in with your lsuhsc user id and password. The other library computers provide access to LSUHSC resources (like email, Moodle and online journals) only.
